"The incident occurred at about 4:20 p.m. when a conductor aboard a Norfolk and Southern train traveling east reported engine issues, which caused the derailment at the Columbus Avenue overpass." Engine issues causing the derailment? Date: 10/08/22 17:03 Re: Norfolk Southern derailment Sandusky, Ohio Author: joemvcnj "Norfolk and Southern"
Right. Got it. At least we don't have the conductor was driving the train. Is this on the Chicago line ? Posted from Android Date: 10/08/22 17:14 Re: Norfolk Southern derailment Sandusky, Ohio Author: bath_wildcat joemvcnj Wrote:

From what I've been hearing the train 310 was crossing over and derailed, taking the west end crossovers and both mains within the crossovers with it. The fluid out of the tankers is confirmed as paraffin wax, so there is no immediate threat to life or property as of yet. Here is your chance to get some rare mileage pictures of Amtrak in Bellevue. Actually anywhere along the former WLE/NKP lines from Oak Harbor to Vermillion.

Any official word on the cause of derailment? Posted from Android Date: 10/10/22 14:04 Re: Norfolk Southern derailment Sandusky, Ohio Author: wabash2800 Dang. Thankfully, no one was on the roadway near the overpass in harm's way.

LOTS of people walk/run the sidewalks under the tracks, and the street is busy. VERY lucky. He did let it slip they knew what actually caused it. Michael Fair Royal Oak, MI Date: 10/10/22 17:07 Re: Norfolk Southern derailment Sandusky, Ohio Author: ARandall70 My understanding is that the derailment has been attributed to a locked axle on the HZRX 187. If any of the waybilled locomotives in the consist were the cause, I'm sure NS will continue to make the process of moving locomoitves more difficult. They likely won't consider that the three units out of Perry, Ohio went a couple of hundered miles out of the way to Cleveland via Elkhart.

How does a locked axle cause a derailment? Posted from Android Date: 10/10/22 19:29 Re: Norfolk Southern derailment Sandusky, Ohio Author: ARandall70 When the axle locks up the wheels stop rolling and begin to slide. As the wheel slides further the flat spot will grow and it is common for sliding wheels to derail on switches. The 310 derailment occured during a crossover move.
In all of the photos I've seen, I have yet to see one where the locomotives appear to be derailed or where crews were swapping out an axle. |
