CSX in the river at Sandstone, WV
Author: P

Piecing together information of a big pileup of coal empties at Sandstone, WV. This is deep in the New River Gorge. Reportedly struck a boulder with locomotives down the bank into the water. Small fires at the headend.
Amtrak 50 was truncated at Huntington, WV. 51, I believe was turned loose, but I doubt it will be able to get through today. Look for it to be truncated - perhaps at DC, but it would be nice to get people aboard as far west as they can.

One GE unit is a complete loss. Completely toasted.

Likely the second unit as well is it is in the drink. Can’t tell if was fire damaged from the photos I’ve seen.

Fortunately report I saw was the crew is OK. Can anyone confirm?

(Edited) now sounds like at least some of the crew was injured. Prayers for a full recovery.

Could have been more of a disaster had Amtrak struck the boulder and the first car or two of the train went into the river with a fire..

Made ABC nightly news. Rockslide, small fires, empty coal hoppers.

I drove out there, but the sidewinders were leaving time I got there...the cars that stayed on rail were dragged back into Hinton. The burnt locomotive is burnt to a crisp...one of the steering arms the front truck was buckled from the heat. Actually the one following is also beyond repair...the third may be scrapped with some parts salvaged...if the coupler box is twisted, as I think it might be...but if not that may be one that can be saved.

Coupler boxes get replaced all the time, even if its sheared off its not really a big deal.

Atleast the boulder is off the track now.

Looks like they let the oil burn on the water for a while as it was running out of the damaged tank.  The burning of the oil helped keep the river cleaner.

IS there any update regarding when the track will be open? The Cardinal is cancelled through 3/11.

The track is probably open...the problem is the sidewinders and other machinery that are trying to raise the fallen locomotives would have to back up in the clear from time to time to let a train through. They are near double track and could easily find a place to go, but at certain points they are going to have continous track time, as when a locomotive is brought up to the track it has be detrucked and loaded on a hospital car. The wrecked cars have probably been removed and placed for examination by whomever but otherwise will be scrapped in place. Possibly months from now. There's one wrecked car near Richmond that is scheduled for scrap that has been sitting for over a year....it's not in anyone's way though so it sits.

Three contractors on this one...Donahue, Corman and Cranemasters. The Mantis crawlers operated by Cranemasters will probably do the locomotive removal.

And still not letting trains through...

Now crews are starting to get called to bring trains toward Hinton......
