Odds & Ends in Lake Erie Land
Author: train1275

Monday April 22 & Tuesday April 23, 2024
North Central Ohio
Slow Yesterday and Today - cloudy and windy today with rain and fog this afternoon.

Since things were slow and catches were few, I combined yesterday and today.

Monday April 22, 2024

1. Train 12N comes through Vermilion, OH with NS 4242 and 4263 throwing a little smoke out the exhaust stacks. 12N is an Elkhart, IN - Conway (Pittsburgh, PA) train.

2. Mty coal Train 773 follows with NS 4631and UP 7877. Both X Boxes are lit.

3. A "near catch" of NS 146313, a coal hopper lettered Pier 6, not sure just what this one was all about.

4. A Canada goose with her goslings.

5. Spring is in the air here.

Tuesday April 23, 2024

6. Well the blue sky of yesterday is gone, and everything is 50 shades of gray today. A loud drumming sound outside this morning caused me to look up to find the Coast Guard Tug "Bristol Bay" with two Fairbanks-Morse 38-8 1/8 opposed piston diesels producing 2500 hp. This is an ice breaker tug. Neat to see and hear, especially as a few days ago the bulk freighter Calumet went by with Alco 251's.

7. - 9.  Standing out at Coen Road west of Vermilion this afternoon and it starts to rain. There is heavy gloom and a bit of fog in the air as Train 269, the intermodal with marine containers from the Port of Newark, NJ to Landers Yard Chicago hustles past CP 222 with NS 4120 and 4507. As he passes we look long to the west and see his tail end disappear as the 310* comes at us all the way down at CP 224 at Risden Road. Then 310 approaches us with NS 9956, 9735 and 4020.

10. The tail end of the 310* has a cut of Potash fertilzer cars. It is that time of year, but many of the fields here are still pretty brown.

As the rain has picked up, unless something really exciting happens we are in for the evening.

I always enjoy your posts, especially the wildlife, and the marine action in and around your area.  But I always wonder how you know what each ship/boat is, and what prime mover(s) they have.  I look at your pictures of many of these ships/boats, and it appears you are using a telephoto lens, and even then I can't make out the ship name.  How do you get that info?

There is a website called Marine Traffic - https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/centerx:-82.5/centery:41.9/zoom:9.

I can see the boats coming at me. Then, for me, it is a matter of extensive googling to find the key dimensions and specs of the boat, including the propulsion power. I then enter that into a spreadhseet for easy future reference.

I think that hopper was something like the one millionth load of coal dumped at that particular location.

The Pier 6 hopper and I think 9 others are celebrating 50 years of coal dumping at Lamberts Point, Va. Every once in a while one will get lost on a Baltimore bound train. I've seen them every now and then. Pretty neat.

That hopper was painted to commemorate the 50th anniversary of operations at Lamberts Point Pier 6 in Norfolk, VA, which occurred on September 18, 2013.
