anticipatied start of howard street tunnel work
Author: Darthsimpletext

trains.com

“ CSX has begun detouring traffic over Norfolk Southern in advance of the anticipated Feb. 1 start date of the Howard Street project, which will allow the railroad to run double-stack intermodal trains through the Mid-Atlantic for the first time. The long-awaited project should be completed by the end of the year.“

Which csx trains are expected to be detoured? Where will the resume point on CSX be after the long round and about journey?

Mr Hinrichs mentioned on the earnings call this week that CSX expects to complete the Howard Street Tunnel in calendar year 2025.  And hopes it will be net positive for CSX (earn back its cost) in three to four years.

Will the tunnel be completely shut down for the duration, or will Trains be able to run through it while work is not being done?

I’m thinking. It was mentioned somewhere else a complete curfew.
As this would cut down tremendously the construction time.

Many CSX field personnel are still unsure of how this will work, although they're apparently being told all of CSX's "I-95 Corridor" trains will be handed to and from NS somewhere in the vicinity of Hagerstown MD and Greencastle PA.  Trains such as M409 and counterpart M410 may be abolished with that traffic absorbed into NS operations, and M415 is now being called M407..... among other changes which are leaving many scratching their heads.

Specific operations during this project will undoubtedly need to be tweaked before everything runs fluidly.

Now, we're hearing many CSX train and engine service personnel may go over to qualify on NS to run this trains (to return to CSX after the tunnel is finished being rebuilt), as NS may not have enough people to run them on their own.  How THAT might work is another issue which will need to be worked out, especially if CSX personnel moving over onto the NS lines between Philadelphia PA and Hagerstown MD need NS "pilots" to move those extra trains.

Once qualified they won't need pilots and though qualification runs will require pilots
the "education" period shouldn't be to long.

It would seem that would have been figured out before Feb. 1. I suppose this will be completed just in time when the Tarrifs are lifted. <G>
