Could be garbage cars? I believe they go through Richmond. Was it 4 boxes on each flat car?

Trash boxes.  There are also blue and sorta orange ones too.  They get really ripe smelling when the weather warms up.

Unless something has changed since I was living in Virginia, the green containers go to Waverly, VA and the orange to Bishopville, SC. Not sure about the blue.

The green "Waste Management" containers come from the New York City / New Jersey area;, and are interchanged by CSX to NS at Collier Yard in southside Petersburg, Va.  NS takes some to the big dump in Amelia, Va. (on the NS Richmond District), and the rest to a much larger MOUNTAIN of trash just west of Waverly, Va. (with a WYE to that site off the mainline).

Working overnight for a CSX contractor company iin their ACCA Yard (Richmond, Va.), I drove the inbound and outbound crews from and to last night's M406 (empties, returning north from Collier), which had over 100 "long" flats (89-footers), and was around 10,000 feet long.

CSX used to have unit trash trains like that 20 years ago but in recent years simply put the moves on regular freights.  However, with the Baltimore tunnel expansion having shut down that part of the route, these trains are back to being UNIT trains again, and are taking a round-about route out toward Cumberland, MD. to get to-from their respective destinations.

There are stack cars on these trains with BLUE containers on these trains as wel - but are single-stacked.  Also,, other trash from Staten Island, in orange containers on orange DSEX (I presume "Department of Sanitation, Essex County") flatcars comes south, loaded, and is handed off from CSX to a shortline in Florence, SC to go west to a major trash mountain at Bishopsville, SC.

I remember when CSX tried to run those trash trains years ago. I believe they were K276/K277 symbols. The original plan was to come up the Hudson Line then change crews at CPSK (Selkirk) and go back down the River Line. Same thing for coming up The River Line to go back down the Hudson Line. I think the connection at CPSK was even upgraded to facilitate this move. It only happened maybe a few times because of power issues. They only had a select group of units for NY runs and the River Line trains required RFP cab signal power for the run beyond NJ south. It was a neat plan.

When the train would come into Selkirk Yatd, often times when it went back out they failed to provide the outbound crew paperwork reversed since the train is now the other way (1st car coming in would be last going out) so it would always take a delay. It sounded like a great plan! lol
