Mishap in Garrett
Author: fdfrisch

EB CSX train S200 (CSX 7767) bumped into the rear end of EB V771 (UP 5950) while on a restricted signal on 2 main between Garrett and West Garrett, Indiana on the Garrett Sub at about 2130 RR time this evening (7/8/04).

The rear car on the coal train is lifted up and there is some damage to the lead engine on rack train S200.

No one was hurt - pretty minor accident although no trains can run on the west yard lead or #1 main. The 3rd main is open so trains can get through Garrett.

Notifications to appropriate personnel have been made.

How wierd is that...I was sitting by the overpass at BI-147 a good part of the afternoon. The EB 7767 was the last train I saw before I left (around 2100 RR time). Are you sure it was an S200 and not Q200? Couldn't tell when she called signals.

Another thing...that V771 was NOT calling signals at all. After talking to a track foreman near Kimmel, I never heard them say anything. Second unit was SP 101, btw.

Mr. Frish

I live close to the old Wabash at the East
end of St. Joe Ctr. Rd. and In. 37 in Ft. Wayne.
I didn't go watch trains this evening.However, I did
sit out on my porch from 6-9 P.M. Strikes me I didn't
hear a loco horn. Just turned on scanner as I type.
Should be a NS 253 or something moving. Is anything
amiss?

Thanks

Mark

I was over by Schwartz and Parent roads between 4:45 and 6:00pm local time and caught 4 trains on the Wabash,

NS 196 (NS 6679,NS 6568)
NS 121 (NS 2863,UP 3344)
NS 28K (NS 9050,NS 9153)
NS 122 (NS 8330)

I heard 253 hit the scanner at Thurman close to 7pm.

NS 253 screamed by Butler this evening at 1939 EDT with the NS 2620 in full whiteface and 44 roadrailers. This train is difficult to catch in daylight, however the late sun of summer allows one to get a shot this time of year (the closer to Detroit the better). 253 has ran about an hour early since Tuesday, July 5th.

Caught it last night also. By West Spencerville at 2000 with NS 9411. I've photographed 253 a total of 3 times this year.

I heard S200 come through Walkerton, IN earlier today, too. I was at Stillwell on the CN and South Shore Line...

Damage to 7767 is mostly cosmetic, engine should be salvagable. Front pilot is pretty mangled. Coupler is intact though. Rear car on the coal train is toast though. Which is quite ironic, the S200 had reported this unit as "DIT" since it was tripping low water since departing Ivanhoe from the IHB. Q500 gave up his 2nd unit to assist the train. The 7767 stalled only part way up the Suman hill.

West Yard lead was clear for trains, and #1 was probably clear too. If they actually ran trains on those tracks is anyones guess. They were moving pretty good when I left tonight, but all via the third main at the time.

Yes, minor accident as far as impact on operations. But the cost will probably be high. S200 was loaded with auto's and I'm sure all those are scrap fodder now.

RJ Corman had arrived in town as I was leaving the Depot.

If anyone wants more details, email me off list and I might be able to answer them. No need to air dirty laundry here.
