If you need Q fans, you will have to look else where. What we offer are: Radiator Fans CODE BLADE COUNT GRILLE STYLE AS BUILT APPLICATION RF-1701 8 Blade CAP TOP / 20 RADIALS GP30, GP/SD35 1961 -1964 RF-1702 8 Blade CAP TOP / 10 RADIALS GP/SD35, GP/SD38, GP/SD40 1964 - 1968 RF-1703 9 Blade CAP TOP / 10 RADIALS GP/SD39, SD45 1964 - 1968 RF-1704 8 Blade OPEN TOP Late GP/SD38, GP/SD40, GP/SD38-2, GP/SD40-2 (Pre-1980) 1968 - 1980 RF-1705 9 Blade OPEN TOP Late GP/SD39, SD45, GP39-2 SD45-2, (Pre-1980) 1968 – 1980 Dynamic Fans: CODE BLADE COUNT GRILLE STYLE AS BUILT APPLICATION DF-1851 10 Blade CAP TOP / 20 RADIALS GP30, GP/SD35 1961 - 1964 DF-1852 10 Blade CAP TOP / 10 RADIALS GP/SD35, Early 40 Series 1964 - 1968 DF-1853 10 Blade OPEN TOP Late 40 Series and all Dash 2s 1968 - 1980 Dave Hussey Cannon & Company Date: 05/29/07 15:06 Re: Info Needed for F40PH Fans... Author: tmurray Here's a picture of one of the phase III F40's that I'm getting ready to give a final paint job to.
The dynamic fan is a Cannon DF-1853 and the cooling fans are P2K Q-fans from an SD60 donor. A phase II F40 will require more creative work. The phase I and II units have low profile fans and nobody currently produces them. I'm about to check it out, but was told by a pair of fellow Amtrak modelers that an Atlas fan housing with a Cannon grill is about the right height. -Tom Date: 05/29/07 20:43 Re: Info Needed for F40PH Fans... Author: TheCurator If the fan is the same style as the VIA Rail Canada F40's then Detail Associates makes a Q fan kit.
Part number 2006 - '48" Q fan, EMD 1980+'. My LHS swears the VIA engines had Q fans. A 48" DB fan kit is available from Precision Scale Company but I don't have a part number. I specifically purchased a couple extra KATO F40PHs for a future phase II project. Hopefully within the next several weeks I will have my workbench and layout up to par and I can start on them.

If you want to get a reasonable facsimile of the 8-bladed Q-fan the DA blade assy. inside an Athearn Genesis fan housing looks much better. If you can score some P2K parts, even better as they already have the correct number of blades and a decent housing.
Personally, I'm in the process of back dating an F40. It's not terribly difficult. The radiator area is an easy conversion with styrene and the side frames are an easy swap out with Atlas Blomberg-M's (they look like crap compared to Athearn side frames but the Bannadaptors don't work on the Kato truck so well....). The most difficult part, it seems, is the vent beneath the exhaust hatch. A phase III unit has two sets of louvers and the earlier units have a single set. I'm planning to graft the vents on from a Walthers F40 donor. I'm in the process of removing the dynamics from one and make it into a commuter (T) F40. As soon as I finish it, Kato should come out with a non-DB equipped unit (in 5 years). -Tom Date: 05/30/07 20:21 Re: Info Needed for F40PH Fans... Author: RailThunder The vent beneath the exhaust hatch is what I figured will be the biggest challenge in my conversion also. I've not studied it really closely yet, but I'm planning on using the door vents off of a GP7/9 Shell if they will work. In the event that won't work I will use a damaged Life Like F40PH Shell from the scrap box. I would love to see the exhaust hatch vent offerred by a detail part manufacturer. I would be happy with styrene and/or etched metal. This would open the door to other F40PH modifications as we are probably not going to see KATO do the F40PHs for quite a while.
