Model Railroading > Adapter (collet?) for Dremel for very small bits

I'm looking for this so I can use my variable speed Dremel Moto Tool with very small drill bits.

I saw this advertised somewhere and can't find it in the Micro Mark catalog.

I bought one on Ebay, Home Depot sells them too. They are a Dremel variable chuck. I love mine. There is a seller on Ebay that sells them fairly cheap, $ 2.99 opening bid with $ 4.99 shipping. Very fast shipping. Home Depot sells for $ 9.99 plus tax. Ebay item # is 380036526773. Good luck.

Thanks Bear but I did a search on that item number and I don't think that was what I was looking for.

I'm looking for something so I can load very fine drill bills down to No. 81.

I have one and they will hold any drill bit from about 1/8" down to the smallest numbered bits available. I wouldn't want to work without it. As far as colletts for the Dremel, I have never seen one that will go down that small, unless there is something out there that I haven't seen. Trust me, the adjustable drill chuck for the Dremel is the way to go.

I get my small bits in it with no problem. It works so much better than the pin vise.

Ok, the description sounded like it only went down to 1/8".

In olden days the dremel tool came with 4 collets, the one with just slits
would hold the #80 drill, but can you slow the dremel down enough to prevent the drills from snapping? I have a Black & Decker electric screwdriver with a Micro Mark adaptor that takes the small #ed drills.
Unlike the dremel tool itself, the B&D Driver has a long snoot that gets the drills into some tight places.

That collet for the dremel may be available in the Walthers catalog.

For most of my work, I use the Dremel flex shaft attached to the rotary tool. It's much easier to maneuver the flex shaft and get a steady hold on it, than trying to drill holes, or grind with the full sized tool in my hand. I use this method for drilling all the small holes needed for grab irons, etc. and my experience is that I have broken less drill bits this way, than even using a pin vise.

I haven't used the Dremel since the Foredom showed up. It is orders of magnitude smoother and quieter and easier to work with. It has a handpiece that is a #0 3 jaw chuck and holds down to #80 bits. It is a bit pricey but oh so nice and will outlast you. Mounted on an IV pole it goes right to the job (vs mounting it over the desk in a fixed spot).
