Tangent 4750 as ATSF Ga-191
Author: nathan314

Thanks to getting off work early due to snow, I was able to finally finish my undecorated Tangent 4750 covered hopper kit as a member of ATSF's Ga-191 class. It's a very nice kit that fits together quite well though the number of options available is somewhat intimidating. I'm also not entirely happy with the top chord stiffener and may replace it with styrene strips. Those minor nits aside, I'm very happy with how it turned out.

Now, what should I build my second kit as? It's too bad no one makes decals for the rather unique ATSF as-delivered paint scheme...

Nice work, Nathan. Thanks for sharing! I've always enjoyed the ATSF covered hoppers with the "Q" logo, which I've always assumed meant "Quality" but I could be wrong. What about another ATSF car carrying only the stencil-style reporting marks and no logos? Only a slight variation from what you've done, but subtle differences can be fun.

What paint scheme is this that you are referring to?

According to an article in the December 2001 issue of Model Railroading Magazine by Ken Edmier, the width of the lettering for "Santa Fe" was squished to fit the letters between the ribs on the 4750's. These spaces were narrower than on previous ATSF mineral red covered hoppers such as the 4427's.
