Each battery weighs about 60 pounds each. I would like to know what a single 6 volt battery weighs for comparison. Total locomotive weight is 360 pounds each. I do recommend Deep Cycle batteries for their deep discharge capabilities. --Jim Baker. Deep cycle is a must for your engine another thing about batterys is the weight of them as this will tell how much is inside the case. Lighter ones will not last as long as the same size but heavier. This comes from years as a mechanic and seeing the ones which cost less fail sooner. Boyd

Weight was never a factor as the each of the 6 volt batteries weighs as much as one 12 volt. Actual factor is now cost--it was either four 6 volt (at 100 bucks apiece)or two 12 volt for nearly the same 100 bucks apiece.
