battery question

Working on my battery powered 1.5" scale FA set. I need 24 volts. Should I go with four 6 volts batteries or two 12 volt batteries?

Marty:  more weight, more traction.

Plenty of room for four batteries. B-unit is unpowered. Currently using four 6 volts. Wanting to make this decision on the best arrangement. Could also go with four 12 volts set to produce 24 volts-combo of parallel and series

What gives the best amp hours?

Use four 6 volt batteries in series.

That's what I have now and just wanted to confirm. Needing to replace current batteries ad they are "shot"

They might cost a bit more, but Deep Cycle Marine Batteries are the way to go.

I use two Group-27 Deep Cycle batteries in my two Baldwin Juice Jack units which I run in M-U.
Each battery weighs about 60 pounds each.
I would like to know what a single 6 volt battery weighs for comparison.
Total locomotive weight is 360 pounds each.

I do recommend Deep Cycle batteries for their deep discharge capabilities.

The easiest way to determine which is best two things one is the physical size of each battery, and the amp hour capacity. Deep cycle is a must for your engine another thing about batterys is the weight of them as this will tell how much is inside the case. Lighter ones will not last as long as the same size but heavier. This comes from years as a mechanic and seeing the ones which cost less fail sooner. Boyd

Going to try two 12-volt batteries this time.   Weight was never a factor as the each of the 6 volt batteries weighs as much as one 12 volt.  Actual factor is now cost--it was either four 6 volt (at 100 bucks apiece)or two 12 volt for nearly the same 100 bucks apiece.
