I first thought the Noise Killer Roadbed was Cracker Jacks.

Am I correctly being told that the round-hatch version of Intermountain's cylindrical hopper is bogus? I don't have a lot of them, but I do have a few. If not, what were the round-hatch versions of the larger cylindrical hopper used for?

No the IM round hatch hopper is not bogus.  It has its' own prototype, particularly if you want a Potash train from the 80ies and most of the 90ies.  IM's design came out in and around 1972 and was built for many years by NSC with both the trough hatch and round, smaller hatches.   The trough hatch on the IM prototype (4550 cu ft) basically was derived for wheat loading similar to the 4740 and 4750 cu ft from Pullman Standard.  To my knowledge, there were no trough hatches on the 3800 cu ft car.

As an example, IM cars which have Canadian Pacific script lettering and TH&B are bogus as these were 3800 cu ft hoppers.  The silver with yellow wheat sheaf  CN reporting marked IM cars are also bogus because they were a 4100 cu ft hopper.

These Rapido 3800 cu ft hoppers will blend in nicely with the IM NSC hopper and the PWRS Hawker Siddelly hopper.  It will provide a better overall protypical appearance for anyone who actually looked at the entire passing train instead of just the front loco's.

OK, thanks for the information.

This guidance will lead me to abandon plans to paint and decorate 4550-cu-ft round-hatch cars as CP cement cars in the 382xxx series, as I had planned to do. Instead, I'll get some of Jason's cars. I had bought some CN cars with black lettering that turns out to be too new for my planned era that I was going to use for this purpose; instead I'll probably sell them. I will also probably dispose of the CP cars I have in script lettering.

Since my modeling area of interest is upstate New York, I don't expect to represent a lot of potash cars except maybe carload-lot shipments going to fertilizer facilities. I'm mostly looking for cars that were in grain, cement, or salt service, and for the latter I'm not sure how much cross-border traffic there was since there are several major salt mines in western New York.

The Rapido product information does state that some trough cars were built among the 3800s.
