Roundhouse Progress and HO Layout Pictures from the weekend
Author: CSURAM

Having fun with a new lamp, we took some pictures on Sunday of the El Capitan making its way down the canyon along the river.

Dad is getting closer to finishing the Santa Fe, San Bernardino, Roundhouse.  Started to weather the structure, next with chalks.   All scratch built from styrene working from plans and lots of photos.   Still working on the roof and adding small details.

Added an old cemetery to the back of the old church.  It was fun to paint the gravestones.

Los Angeles city scene with the double track main behind the building.   Branch line running down the street for the locals.   That sweet lady might help out the bum on the bench.

Looking back towards the industrial part of Los Angeles with a southern California river.  The tracks turn to the right and head up Cajon Pass.   To the left then run up the canyon that the Santa Fe passenger train came down in the previous photos.   The church is just to the left.   Out of the scene to the right is the City of South Pasadena and orange groves.

Thanks for looking!

When your dad works on the roundhouse does he work where it is going to be placed on the layout or a work bench, its a large structure must be fragile.   thanks  robert

Thanks!

The roundhouse is surprisingly sturdy being made out of styrene.  He had a workbench set up to work on the roundhouse.

The lamp works well, excellent scenery in the canyon. The rockwork and creek look great. Nice trees too.

Nice work!

One quibble from a geologist, (the only kind of weirdo that would notice):  with that church yard sitting on a big rock outcrop like that, how do they dig the graves in the cemetery?

Yes, I'm being annoying.  The scenery looks very good.

Also, is it not more common for gravestones in small cemeteries to face the adjacent church?

Thanks for sharing. Nice modeling. As a fellow scratchbuilder, I'd like to know how your dad made the windows on the roundhouse.

Thanks

Thanks for the kind comments.    Don't know about how graves face, my nephew was the surveyor so he got first choice.

My Dad has had that lamp for 30+ years and it was in a drawer.  I'll take a photo of it this weekends.  The engines are Walthers F7s. They run and sound great.

The Windows:  He printed them on clear styrene.  He practiced with the color and size but got to a place that he liked it.  He glued them from the inside, then he took small, thin strips that he painted in that rust color and added to give more detail.

After looking at lots of photos, he finally decided on the open top section.  Many years they had louvers during and after the steam era.

That initial weathering was done with a mix off coffee.  Next I think he will use some chalks.

Thanks again for looking.

Thanks. I thought perhaps the window detail was printed on clear plastic sheet. So many of the industrial and railroad type buildings that Walthers makes, for example, are grossly oversized in this detail.
