Source for ESU loksound decoders?
Author: wheel_slip

I am looking for a source for ESU loksound v4.0 decoders. Can anyone recommend a place that stocks these? I have checked Tony's Trains and DCC train in Cincinnati and found most items out of stock. Any suggestions?

Thanks
Andy

Intermountain is building a full assortment of ESU products and Litchfield Station in AZ has always had everything I have ordered in stock at nice prices.

Yankee Dabbler lists the Lok Sound Ver 4.0 on their site, good price also.

Hey Andy,

One thing you do need to note is if u buy this Loksound decoder and you do not have the programmer, you will need to make sure the dealer you buy it from can load the appropriate sound file on it for u.

Many dealers do this FYI. Kleins will not obviously. Bruce

Bruce,
This brings up another question... Will the loc Programmer allow me to adjust other brand decoders (I understand I can't mess with the sound files in other than ESU locsound decoders) but what about just doing basic programing?

The LokProgrammer will only program LokSound decoders but it is an extremely handy device to have if you plan on getting a lot of LokSound decoders. There is also no reason to buy V4.0 decoders without a LokProgrammer. If you are buying Selects then you don't necessarily need the LokProgrammer but it does make things easier.

The difference between a V4.0 and a Select is that with V4.0 decoders you can mix and match specific sounds from the ESU Sound Library as well as modify the sound schedule and even add your own sound recordings. The catch is that in order to do all of this you MUST have a LokProgrammer. If you don't have a LokProgrammer and are buying V4.0's it is a total waste of money. There is also no reason to buy a V4.0 if you do not plan to modify the specific sounds within the sound files either. If you just want to adjust function mapping, sound volumes, and lighting effects, the LokSound Select is all you need. Based on MSRP the Select is also $20 less. Selects are $109.99 and V4.0's are $129.99 at MSRP.

Be sure that if you are buying V4.0's that you are using them for what they can do. If you aren't, they aren't worth the extra expense.

The Select is the exact same hardware as a V4.0, in fact all Selects start out as V4.0's and have to be converted by ESU to become Selects and the only thing it takes away is the user's access to the sound schedule. It is not a stripped down low end decoder. It only takes away the one thing that 99% of modelers will never use anyway.

Speaking of the LokProgrammer. Is it compatible with the Apple IOS? I've been looking at buying one, but everything I've researched, LokProgrammer appears to be only compatible with Windows OS? I hope I'm wrong because my layout is interfaced with a MacBook Pro using JMRI and I'd really like to purchase the LokProgrammer.

Thanks, Mike

The software is only for windows available. I am running Fusion from VMWare to run hard windows bound software in a virtual windows system under OSX in my iMac. Works perfect.
I am not aware of anything similar for IOS (iPhone, iPad etc.)

Good explanation Lee. Andy, if you look at MB Kleins stock, you will see numerous ESU Loksound Select decoders with pre-programmed sounds for many different engine types. Good luck. Bruce

Thanks Guys for this information....

I am more than happy with the performance of the ESU brand decoders and I am making them my brand of choice. Litchfield Station & DCCtrains (Cincinnati) are the shops of choice so far...

Thanks for the info. Kind of thought LokProgrammer was only compatible with Windows, but wasn't 100% sure. I hope ESU will consider a Mac/Apple version of their software in the near future.
