Who made this?
Author: Clarence

I got this from an estate sale, from a modeler (Karl Hilbers) who passed away sometime in the 1990's. It's metal with a wooden floorboard.
The sides are non-magnetic, but I don't think they're brass.
The ends are magnetic, as you can see.
The floor is wooden, with wooden blocks glued to it for the underframe. If you look at the sides you can see tackheads holding the sides to the floor.
The couplers (next post) are weird.

Any idea who made this car?

And the couplers.
The coupler heads are one piece castings, they do not open. I guess you lift the car to couple/uncouple.
The couplers are "load cushioning". There is a coupler box post that a slot in the coupler fits over. Then there are two springs (Kadee coupler springs?) on either side of the post that keep the coupler centered. It does move in/out a bit as I push/pull on it.

Any idea what this is?

It's an Ulrich kit.

These old Ulrich kits are fun. Cast metal sides, stamped metal ends, wood floor. They are still around and affordable if you know where to look.

Be careful handling the pot metal sides, as they grow very brittle with age. Guess how I know.

Exactly correct. I have several of them on the layout.

What I like about this is it's heavy enough to not need extra weight hidden by a load. This is going to be a model of an empty gon, with trash, dirt, and scrap wood in the corners and sides.

Selley, who I think that was based out of Florida in the early 60's had similar couplers. They made many different white metal (pewter die cast) parts for cars, locos, and general scenery. I have several cars with these couplers myself. In later years the company was known as Selley Finishing Touches, a division of Bowser Mfg. located in Pennsylvania.
