Scale Trains SD40-2 sound file
Author: Chad

I picked up my two ATSF ST SD40-2's Rivet Counter with sound last Friday. Really, really nice and the running is super smooth. But I noticed something while they idled I have never heard or at least paid attention to. The prime mover idle RPM seems to change. I have attached a video. Is this new or have I had my head in the sand? Don't get me wrong I like it, it's pretty cool.

Are the funky/asymmetrical hood letters on 5125 prototypical?

Yes, depending on if it was painted by EMD or re-painted by ATSF.

The blue pare of the paint looks almost black in the photo's. I assume it's supposed to be blue?

I have the sane two units and they are indeed blue.

the Bowser SD40-2F "redbarn" does the same. it may be something to do with a later phase SD40-2 having an exhaust silencer. I noticed that ESU Loksound has a new file for an EMD 645E "silenced". they sound fantastic!

Yes they are blue, it's just the lighting.

Later EMDs would idle down when the reverser is centered. Also after working hard they stayed idling high for a bit.
Dang, been a while since I ran a SD40-2:) had to think about that.
