Model Railroading > Christmas Train SetsDate: 08/09/18 16:07 Christmas Train Sets Author: mahnud With a 2year old grand daughter now in the picture, I was hoping for suggestions for something in the O, S, G, range set for the library to run around the tree or piano. We have an HO Polar Express, but I think it is too fragile to let a 2 year old grab. Need to buy soon. Limited shopping days to Christmas.

J. Date: 08/09/18 17:01 Re: Christmas Train Sets Author: mahnud Unfortunately I live in an area where there are no local train shops. The last model shop shut down 5 to 10years ago. I can deal with 2 hours travel or the internet. I was hoping for suggestions for something other than promoted on Amazon.

J. Date: 08/09/18 17:33 Re: Christmas Train Sets Author: wag216 I think you would think about Lionel or American Flyer. My dad bought me a Lionel 1661E in Christmas 1937. This 1661 still runs (with care). I moved to HO in 1950 and know I am back to Lionel (Too many birthdays). wag216 (82 and still running trains)

So far most interesting set is eztec set on Amazon, My wife and I saw a nice large scale train at the WGH Show in Houston earlier this year I was trying to remember. It was not Lionel or Lionel/American Flyer. It was perhaps G from Europe? Polar Express in O might be ok, but I would prefer larger with carols/music, rather than dialogue.

Date: 08/09/18 19:02 Re: Christmas Train Sets Author: Streamliner Buy an LGB starter set on eBay. Make sure it is one of the older sets made in Germany. Look for photos of the slide shoes on the loco to determine amount of usage and look for a lightly used set. These will run forever and handle the abuse of small children. Here’s a beauty: https://www.ebay.com/itm/LGB-20540-Christmas-Train-Set-1995-EX-Box/332746557927?epid=1222566008&hash=item4d793d89e7%3Ag%3AQBYAAOSwVnFbZQmy&_sacat=0&_nkw=lgb+set&_from=R40&rt=nc&_trksid=p2303516.m570.l1313.TR7.TRC1.A0.H0.Xlgb+set.TRS1

Good Luck! Bruce Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/10/18 17:24 by BCutter. Date: 08/09/18 20:24 Re: Christmas Train Sets Author: wpdude We have a large Lionel battery powered set that plays Christmas carols around our tree.Every year it gets knocked off the track by kids and cats and , umm, sometimes grown ups. Most of you know i'm in HO, but this set is bigger than O, takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'!
Date: 08/09/18 22:11 Re: Christmas Train Sets Author: MojaveBill My first train was Marx tinplate passenger train at Christmas around 1940. Not anywhere near scale but it was bullt like a tank and I'm still in the hobby at 82... (N scale!)
Bill Deaver Tehachapi, CA Date: 08/10/18 04:32 Re: Christmas Train Sets Author: mahnud Will look at LGB and Lionel again. I also think Piko may what I saw at the show. Thank you all for the suggestions.
