Appearently....as the story goes....some shop worker took a look at the first loco when it arrived and wrote in chalk on the smokebox front "big boy". The name stuck. of the first or an early unit while under constuction at Alco. The 4-8-8-4 locomotives were originally to be called the Wahsatch class. However at the American Locomotive Company's Schnectady works one of their employees chalked "Big Boy" on the smokebox door and that moniker stuck to this class of locomotive ever since.
