Model Railroading > The 2019 PennCentral - The Integrated Mill gets a bit larger.

So as I am focusing on completing trackage inside the integrated steel mill, I'm contemplating some changes. In Picture 1 you can see that a few new structures are in place...but only as placeholders, as I am considering a large change in the mill....the current location of the BOF is going to be the home of the three electric furnaces...this puts thoise melt shops closer to the s crap metal handling area...the BOF will move to a point just beyond the blast furnaces...and the sintering plant relocated to just between the blast furnaces and basic oxygen furnace...a continuous caster will be attached to the BOF....and the rolling and finishing mills redesigned into a larger space...all within the 61 foot length of the mill complex. The layout is quite crowded right now as the staging has been emptied to allow me room to add the completed staging yards under the layout.

Picture 2 ia a set of coil cars from Australia - which will be repainted and Americanized (they already have Kadees and US-style trucks. They will carry Norwood & South Massena reporting marks.

Picture 3 is a one of the bases my friend Paul Strubeck/Gotham Marine made for me on Shapeways. I designed these to be attached down at the subroadbed level. In this way I get a larger footprint to support the signals, and then ballasted the proper amount of the foundation appears above the ballast and the underlying support is stronger. The shadows tell an erroneous story - the foundations hold the entire base of the signals - none of it overhangs..

Thank you. The bases set the mast at a good height and provide a nice wide footing below the ballast and a hole to run wires through.....

The first run was a bit pricey as they are 100% solid models...we are working on a hollow variant. But you can see this fellow  makes all manner of carfloat parts in HO.....

Hah hah, unlike my basement which is an active construction site (working on finishing it for a RR) and I often circle it 5 or 6 times trying to find a tool.  I'd get so much more done if I knew where they were.  Thankfully my wife comes down and re-organizes things every few weeks bringing organization to chaos!

...just wait Jim, until you have that space full of benchwork and track and trains......and THEN you try and find a tool...lol....I solded the tool location issue - at least I thought so - with a nice big tool cart....that fit under the layout....then...I managed to at times lose ALL the tools at once....:)

>> Bob It was bad enough in my last 10x18' layout room - spend half the time looking for tools.  The new one will be about double the size so it's going to be slow going unless I can change my ways and come up with a system.  If you are any indidcation, all hope is lost! Cheers, Jim
