Real dirt work on the 1/8th scale today Indiana Live Steamers
Author: santafedan

The weather has finally begun to cooperate.  We began work this morning at about 50 degrees and it topped out at 77.  Perfect.
Today we were able to get to the ditch work to handle the runoff form the area around this phase of the layout work.  This area was too wet to work until the dry spell of September.
This section will eventually be past of a 3000 foot extension.  Over the past two Wednesdays we put down 500 feet of track.

Great way to earn priveledges to run trains on the track.
A win-win for everyone involved.  Even not so able bodied
folks can help out in some way.

10 foot sections.  At least it is aluminum.

Its the most common method in this gauge 10ft is used but some use longer not too often. Laying ties and then putting the rail on it means the ballast has to be leveled very well so you can attach the track with screws easily.

We use a compactor to set the base of about 4 inches.  Then the sections are added to the base.  Ballast is added. Then we use a "wiggler" to (a device with 3 sets of fingers) settle the ballast.  The ties are plastic with hollows in them.  The ballast snuggles in and things are done.

The ride is very smooth.

I guess the gandy dancers would have to have really tiny little feet.

Oh yes your track looks great now about those white rocks,,,,,,,,,,,,,do you really polish each one before putting in its place?  LOL Like the way you do your track am still in the long process of making that weed eater rock spreader some day will get around to it.  Enjoy the photos of your operation too.

Are they Irish? Here at LALS, we are having a problem finding scale Chinese to work our tracks when the public is being run. Want to to show the public how they did it 150 years ago....
