Hammond Lumber #16 With Caboose
Author: FiveChime

Hammond Lumber Company locomotive and caboose from the Samoa, California operation.
The locomotive is an HO Northwat Shortline Alco "Minarets" 2-8-2T model with DCC. Caboose
was kitbashed from three Roundhouse wooden caboose kits with Kadee trucks. Both models
painted and decaled by Tom Eikernkotter of Beaver Creek, Ohio. Tom had a foundness for this
locomotive ever since he photographed her sitting lonely at Samoa in December, 1964 with equipment
being scrapped on the then, Georgia Pacific operation. The prototype still exists and is currently
numbered #10 for Crossett Western Co. on the Chelatchie Prarie Railroad at Yacolt, Washington.

Enjoy it here in real life in 12-inch scale.

It's currently undergoing its 1,472-day inspection.

In 2007 I was alternately running or firing the HLC #16 (CW #10) at Yacolt and running or firing the HLC #17 at Mineral on the Mt. Rainier Scenic.  They looked nearly identical except for the lengthened smoke box on #16.  The interesting part was trying to remember which engine was which when getting on them because, though they came out of nearly the same mold, the cylinder cock levers worked in opposite directions!  I have been told that #16 was the last steamer to be produced at Alco's Brooks Works.

Here's the engine in a photo that Steve Eshom posted on 03/18/2007:

Here is a shot from Samoa in February 1966.  The gentleman taking the picture is my IBM manager, Jack Shekell. Buttoned suit coat, white shirt, 14 pound wing tips, etc...
