Met Ted when I first started patronizing the old store on Gay Street in Baltimore, almost 50 years ago.  It had started in the Klein family as a hardware store around the turn of the 20th Century, and in the early 70s still carried a few hardware items, but had largely been given over to model railroadeing.  I am showing my age, as when I met Ted he was in his late 30s.  He died at 85.
