How would you model an ITTX flat with truck cabs?
Author: genevasub

All:

Attached is a mock-up of a flat with a load of trucks. Yes, those are Legos standing-in for a pedestal!
If you've modeled one of these cars with a load of trucks can you tell me what car you used? Has a car been
produced with the pedestals? If you scratchbuilt or kitbashed this car please tell me how you got there and
please post photos of the end result. References to any articles you know of would be appreciated.

This mock-up uses the floor from an Athearn 86' highcube. I have 10 trucks in 86' whereas most prototype photos
of these loads shows a max of 9 cabs in 89'. So is my spacing of the trucks off? All are Athearn Ford C-cabs.

Thanks in advance for any information and photos of a correct model!

I have never seen trucks piggy backed like that as they use a device on the fifth wheel plate that attaches to the front axle. That's the way they do it now and have for years when doing it on highways. From looking at them they look too close together and uneven. Just my fyi you asked for some opinions. Other than that looks good.

.   .   .   They were commonly unloaded, arriving looking just like this, at Ford's Pico Rivera, CA, plant. Except not mounted on a Lego ;-)

JB:

How were they unloaded.  I'm assuming by an A-frame crane or something similar?

Thanks,

Nice!  Judging by your photo, I would use a 89-foot F89F channel-sided flatcar.  These have been produced by both Walthers (long ago) and by Athearn Genesis over the past few years.  Be sure to give the car ITTX reporting marks.  For the pedestal, I would just build them out of channel-beam or I-beam styrene of the approximate sizes chopped to length from Evergreen Scale Models.  Alternatively, a cheaper option is to go with an 85' Channel-sided flat from Athearn (either blue box or RTR).

Cheers,
Harry

Paint the lego block flat black and maybe many won't even notice it!  :-p

It's a different style of flat car, but here's my dad's shot of the GTW 303632 on the Rock Island at Blue Island, IL.
