You might be a model railroader if.....
Author: pilotblue

You might be a model railroader if.....................(Apologies to Jeff Foxworthy)

-You've ever used a Brightboy to sand your fingernails.
-You know the locations of the small towns they talk about on the Weather Channel because you went there to photograph the depot before it was torn down.
-There's been a railroad spike in the trunk of your car for more than three years and you can't remember why or where you got it.
-You've answered the front door wearing an Optivisor.
-You know the phone numbers of three hobby shops by heart, and your credit card number.
-You've stopped on the side of the road to take a picture of a tree because "it looked realistic".
-A hobby shop calls to check on you during the virus because they haven't heard from you for a while. (Bonnie at Mainline Hobby, Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., Yes, I'm fine but thanks!)
-If you've ever said the words "No, Red and Vermillion are not the same thing".

Feel free to add your own, Cheers!

You know the phone numbers of three hobby shops by heart and they all know your credit card number.

The first thing you check out when looking at house you may buy is where your layout will be located.

When trying to find more space for trains you tell your girlfriend you are thinking of getting rid of the bed and she says " the bed goes, I go", and you think to yourself "Gonna miss that girl."

- You know what a ' Sound Decoder ' is... and how to ' reset ' it.

- You know what ' Homosote ' is and where to buy it, even though it's in a nearby state.

- When the Contractor works on the house you ask them to save the sawdust.

- When the Contractor leaves you check to see if you can save any sawdust.

+ some of this is getting a little too close to home ...

More than once approached by business owners, wanting to know why you are photographing their buildings... When you tell them why, they give you this look that is half bewilderment and half that you are a grown-up nut that plays with trains...

You go to the hardware store, looking for particular items to use on your model railroad.  The clerk or owner asks what you need it for. And when you tell them, again they look at you kind of funny perhaps with an answer like: "Oh I see..."

You use a caliper to measure items while scrathbuilding  and note a human hair is larger in diameter than you thought it was....

You hire a contractor to bore holes through the walls of rooms in your basement so you can run trains in the entire basement. If you do this, you are likely single or divorced or soon to be divorced.

Your dad, not a model railroader, refuses to ride on a large scale train with you. He comes up with more than one reason he won't do it including one that riding through the tunnel reminds him too much of Vietnam...

"Civilians" find out you have a model railroad and ask if they can come over and see your trainset...

Had the hardware store one recently, got a gallon of black semi-gloss. He said, I have to ask, black and semi-gloss? Shadow box look for the layout and no finger prints. Oh, I see.

Thought all of the examples were funny, but I just had to HOWL when I saw  " - There's been a railroad spike in the trunk of your car for more than three years and you can't remember why or where you got it."  You must have gone through the trunk of my car.  Thought I was absolutely the only one whoever did that.  Heck, I even have a few more  spikes in different locations in the garage (put there after cleaning out the trunk of the car on a couple of occasions over the years) that I can't remember their lineage either.

Non-railroader vistiors to the house ask if you leave your trainset up all year round, or just at Christmas.

When you save the charcoal out of the fish tank filters because it looks like coal and you have 5 jars of it
when you get samples of shingles at the hardware store to make roads and roofs out of
when you save the old water filter from the refrigerator because you think it looks like a silo

This one made my day! Can't stop laughing! Shared this one with my wife and she gave me the "don't even think about it" look! Hmmmmm...

Here's a reverse one. If you are a "golden age" modeler who's not in tune with post-1970 railroading, when someone mentions "coalporter" you think "I've got you under my skin..." and "Night and day..."

If you plan stops at hobby shops or train stores as part of your vacations.

And yes, I might pull that off this next week in So Cal.
