Southern Pacific 4-8-0 Locomotives
Author: Barstool

Guys, any SP steam fans model the SP  Oregon which was mostly lumber traffice, is the full history of the 4-8-0's but this book hard bound and cost $39.00 is a wealth of infomation and photo's by Tom  Dill and Joseph A.Strapac.  These locomotives lived a short live as the diesels came but they were built to worklite rail and could handle the traffic......I saw the 2937 at Suisun Calif and went to Bakersfield to see the 2914 which worked the Buttonwillow branch and went on a fan trp  with the 2914 as the power...Yhe dad story about the 2937 wasseen the engine arrive at Susiun-Fairfield coming off a lease from thr NWP.....The rond house took a look at the egine and did not like it and said it will never runand was sent to Sacramento and srappedin 1953...
Model wise, North Point was going to produce this model in three or four classes, but the problem was the cost...North pont had a price tag of $1200 or $1300 dollars...Over the years, I fond three 4-8-0's, a early type and the more modern class, but have never seen any around or advertised, so my luck came to a strop...This book agaoi, is loaded with photo's and informiation covering the whole fleet.. You can prchice from Southern Pacific Historical & Techincal Society...This wil answer all questions abou the SP 4-8-0......You will be buried in infirmation as you read and you will not be sorry....

I see box tenders on the 2-8-0's, I have never seen for sale and theonly real box tener I sawwas the 2543, but the SP mixed the tenders as was needed and gave egines a personalty..
The work on the brass 4-8-0  looks good reguliding.....some of the 200sdid get plows, but only working in Oregon., good work  In addition to the 4-8-0 story, is Tom Dill was agreat modeler, he modeled Ashland  and he did a super job, the detalwas out standing, Ashland durmg the steam days was 2-10-2 country working to Euguen and Dunsmuir, can one imagine five 2-10-2's working a sooouth bound lumber drag...I met Tom on a fantrip in early 1950's and he was like Joe Straapac, was always looking for information, photo's and also took many shts him self., I was going to Oregon to visit him, but I was way too late as Tom past away..Tom did all he culd to keep his interest up and back in modeling, he was into SP 2-10-2's like my self  and may other engines....Anothr guy who was into 2-10-2's was Chuck Ziese, like Tom, Chuck had good hands  and could rebuild or repair brass...We will miss these gusys and many oithers...

Mr. Stark, you have quite a fine fleet of SP Steam Locomotives.  The SD&AE 102 caught my eye but they are all terrific.  The 4-8-0 was a rare wheel arrangement.  As far as I know, only Central Pacific, Southern Pacific and Norfolk & Western had them.  Others are welcome to correct me if I left any roads out.

They were built in 1898.  They had a lifespan longer than many classes of SP steam.

They were originally constructed as heavy main line power.

WHEN Isay that the 2900's lived a short live, they were falling from service  in the lat 1940's and finished live by 1955 when 2914 was taken out of service at Bakersfield..The bulkof the 2900's fell fast in 1949 and whe the gE 70yonners arrived that was be end of these mighty little brutes....
