Model Railroading > More from the CB&W Open House in Virginia (Part 2)Date: 12/01/24 13:15 More from the CB&W Open House in Virginia (Part 2) Author: rbx551985 Changing "JFIF" photo files into JPG files is not simple if one has no access to the conversion apparatus except when Public Libraries are open - especially during a Holiday season. But the photos of last weekend's "CB&W" (Chesapeake Bay & Western) Model RR open house are coming - if slowly.
Here are 3 images of waterfronts depicted on the massive layout. (1) Car float linking "West Point, Va" with the CB&W's operations across the Pamunkey River into New Kent County, Va. (2) Car float closeup with tugboat (3) Lake with boating/sunning on the shore near Rapidan, Va. Note the bridge being painted new silver in the background. The concrete bridge carries the CB&W mainline through town. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 12/01/24 13:16 by rbx551985. (1) Overall, areal view of the base's east end, where a spur crosses base trackage in a diamond - and a submarine is docked at left. (2) This image is to the right of image #1 (3) No doubt real life submarine personnel might point out errors here, but the model base always elicits long stares and lots of camera flashes from layout visitors..... and the vessel's tail fin protruding from the water gets them every time. (1) Riverview motel is a major feature, although it might be difficult to get sleep when CB&W's trains roll by. (2) Details often make a scene great, and the bath tub out back of these structures often get a laugh when visitors compare it to any one of the many "Redneck" jokes told by Jeff Foxworthy. (3) This hospital car at the base just past the hotel adds a lot to the scene and often elicits conversations among visitors who have been a part of that segment of the U.S. military. Date: 12/01/24 13:31 Re: More from the CB&W Open House in Virginia (Part 2) Author: rbx551985 This huge layout has many levels (seven), and it can take a train - runnnig at HO scale "track speed" - 45 minutes or more to read the other end of the line. One aspect of the layout is that the two ends of the line, represented by freight yards, sees the eastern end of the line's yard (Langley Yard) directly beneath the other (French Creek Yard).
(1) Club members enjoy the open house (visitors had just walked past them when this image was taken), and the many levels can be seen here in the photo. YES, the same continuous mainline runs through every level, zig-zagging back and forth through multiple scenes at every location. (2) Directcly behind the photographer's position while taking image #1, above, is this scene. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 12/01/24 13:39 by rbx551985. Date: 12/01/24 13:37 Re: More from the CB&W Open House in Virginia (Part 2) Author: rbx551985 (1) The longest stretch of mainline, upstairs, is seen here with a lake to the left and a train moving through a large rock cut at right.
(2) From the other end of the rock cut, we see a drone shot of the freight train climbing the grade. (3) Some model vehicles are not necessarily freelance. "Puhlman's Tree Service" is a real company located in a county just north of prototype Yorktown, Va. and their truck is shown here in HO Scale. The decals are color photos of the real vehicle, reduced in size to fit the model. The cell phone used to take the images would not focus close enough to show it, but the truck's license plate # is the actual Virginia plate (another photo of the prototype) reduced in size to fit the model.
