Does the Athearn GP50 have the extra-wide hood?
Author: pennsy3750

Any of you guys know if the Athearn blue-box GP50 is one of the ones that they did with the hood that was wider than scale? I'm thinking about rebuilding one into one of the GP38-3 rebuilds that NS made from their GP50s.

The GP50's hood are very close to scale width.
They are a good model, a lot better than the
old GP35's and SD45's.

I own one each Athearn GP35, SD45, and GP50. The first two have lights on the nose and cab face, while the latter only has the ones on the cab. Of course, the GP35 came decorated for NYC and the SD45 was for BN, so the noselights on either were inaccurate anyway.

The GP50 from Athearn has correct hood width.

I'm confused though. A GP38-3 rebuilt from a Dash 9????

Sorry bout that, had a brain fart. Should have said a GP38-3 that they rebuilt from their GP50s. These are the 5800-series units. Last I heard they were up to 5813 IIRC.

Fixing the typo in my original post now.

The NS GP38-3 rebuilds are up to 5818 now.

I am currently modeling one of these and am almost finished. I decided to use a lot of Cannon parts on mine though.

Correct. Prototype is a bit wider than a Geep.

Add Train Master to correct width list.

how about the SD9? I assume that's a fatty too :)
And the GP30, but that's LONG out of production.

Guilty. SD9 and GP30 are both fatties. I forgot about the SD9 - it's OOP.

The GP30 mold became the GP35 mold before I was born!

Forgetful again, I remain:

Actually, I think the tooling went on to Lionel HO or one of the other manufacturers at the time. At least that's what a club member told me a long time ago.....

No. The Lionel was quite accurate for that time. The Athearn dies were recycled into the GP35 which shared some parts with the GP30. Photos of the Lionel and Athearn in ads show how bad the Athearn was.

The Lionel /was/ recycled and still available from Bachmann. Until recently original Lionel shells, via BevBel, were available from A-Line.

Thanks BW for that comprehensive list, and all the others who helped refine it.

Thanks, I stand corrected, I never knew the true facts, glad to finally hear the REAL story.

Don't forget the DD40.
The DD40 fits into the "Widebody" catagory
.
