Two Questions...

Does the Amtrak site have a system map?

Will the Capital, Lake Shore, Carl Sandburg and Illinois Zephyr trains roll back an hour in their schedules when Daylight Savings Time falls back or does Amtrak have a date of its own?

Thanks in advance

The answer to the first is yes they do. Go to: http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/Page/Routes_Index_Page&c=Page&cid=1080072922209&ssid=4

They have both interactive flash and PDF versions.

Thanks Rick but I still don't see a system map--but regional maps.

Top of the page under "Interactive Route Atlas."

Amtrak in the past has made schedule changes coincide with the start and end of Daylight Time, but now that Daylight Time starts in early March and ends in early November I don't think they still do that.

During "Spring Forward," Amtrak trains operating at 0200 simply lose an hour and, if possible, make it up en route if schedule padding allows it. During "Fall Back," Amtrak trains wait, if necessary, at the first station they reach after the time change in order to depart on time under the 'new' clock.

(I personally despise Daylight Time, especially its idiotic extension into March and November, and recently read an analysis indicating that it wastes more energy than it saves.)

Thanks for the input Patch.

I agree on your observation of the supposed savings in energy.

With you 100%! I even took it to the next level and for years refused to adjust any of my clocks and instead just modified when I went to work, etc..

You can hang the blame for the extension onto our own local congressman, Fred Upton (R-Kalamazoo), who concieved of that particular piece of stupidity and amended it to the Energy Bill a few years ago.

I like it

Fine but does it save energy?

I understand that Saskatchewam doesn't have daylight saving time and someone posted somewhere that it is because the Indians up there said "Only the white man would cut six inches off the top of the blanket and sew it onto the bottom and think they had a longer blanket". :-) Pretty well sums it up, don't you think??

As an 8-5'er during the week, I absolutely love DST. It gives me an hour more after work to do anything I need to do outside before it gets dark.

I can remember living in Indiana before they made the change to DST and observing the sun beginning to rise prior to 5am!! Even as a teenager, I found it absurd that daylight began before 5am. I don't know if DST saves any energy or not, but there is no reason for it to be light outside at 5am and get dark at 8pm. With the schedules most people have, the extra daylight at the end of the day allows many people to enjoy more of the day - and I am glad for it.

As far as I'm concerned, we should advance the clocks another hour between Memorial Day and Labor Day, Daylight Savings Time is great, though I'm also rarely ever awake in the morning before 9am so I like the "longer daylight". I'm one of those night owls who's awake until 2 or 3am most nights and don't get up before 9 unless I want to head over to Depew and photograph #48 :)

Except in Arizona! The last three weeks, high temps have been 110-114 degrees. After a 114 degree day, believe me you can't wait for that blazing sun to go down!!
