Passenger Trains > A good AMTK story...but with the worst error of allDate: 07/25/08 19:58 A good AMTK story...but with the worst error of all Author: lowwater You won't see it here, or in the link posted for the rest of the story, but this was the top-of-the-FRONT-page lead story -- and they spelled it "Amtrack" in the headline.
The "frequent site" mistake pales in comparison............ Glenwood Springs Amtrak station state’s 2nd busiest The train brings thousands through Glenwood Springs By By John Gardner Glenwood Springs, CO Colorado, According to the Amtrak fiscal year 2007 report for Colorado, Glenwood Springs was the second most used train station in the state between No. 1 Denver and No. 3 Grand Junction. Glenwood recorded 32,697 boarding and alightings (or arrivals) behind Denver with 123,273 during 2007. Grand Junction, in third, had 25,115. Colorado overall saw 208,552 Amtrak passengers in 2007. It’s nothing out of the ordinary according to Amtrak media relations manager Marc Magliari. “We see strong business in Glenwood consistently,” Magliari said. “It’s a popular destination but it’s also a gateway to places in Colorado beyond Glenwood like Aspen and Grand Junction.” Colorado has two long-distance train routes running east and west; The California Zephyr, which runs through major metropolitan areas from Chicago, Denver, to Emeryville, Calif.. And the Southwest Chief, which runs from Chicago, through Kansas City, La Junta and Trinidad, Colo. and Albuquerque, N.M., to Los Angeles. Fond memories. We were headed through on #5 a FEW years ago, but we won't get into how many, and we were "mooned" by a fellow on a raft on the river.
As this guy was giving us the astronomy lesson, one of the women in the same craft smacked him a good one with a paddle, almost knocking the moon out of orbit!!! Or the raft if you prefer. I knew right then I'd enjoy trips on Amtrack...oops my bad!!! The Denver Hotel, with an excellent brew pub, is just across the street--a very convenient place to stay. Glenwood Springs is an extremely pedestrian friendly town and there is an excellent shuttle bus system. Getting to Aspen is also very easy with frequent bus service up the Roaring Fork. In fact, the Roaring Fork Transit District is number two in Colorado with only the Denver system carrying more passengers. It is an impressive system carrying both locals (mostly workers) and tourists to and from various towns and ski areas.
