Amtrak to Philadelphia Airport?
Author: Lackawanna484

Can Amtrak trains operate through to Philadelphia's International Airport? I know that Septa electric trains service the airport, so could an Amtrak train with a Septa pilot or crew, etc get to the airport?

Amtrak is in an excellent position to build on its reputation in the last storm as an all weather transportation provider. With the NJ Turnpike shut down, the NY area airports shut down for 30 hours, Amtrak's service between NY and DC soldiered on with mostly on time service. Newark Airport's link to the Amtrak station ran flawlessly during the snow storm, even if the planes didn't fly.

Being able to move three trainloads of passengers from a closed Newark Airport to an open Philadelphia (or BWI) airport would be the equivalent of 10 737 aircraft. That's a big difference.

Amtrak used to operate it's Atlantic City trains to the Airport Station....even had a code-share agreement with Midway Airlines.

There is a very rarely used (judging by the rust on the railhead) electrified connection from the Southbound NEC mainline from 30th Street's lower level to the Airport Line.

That's very helpful as it means NJ Transit's high capacity multilevel or 13 car MU trains could be operated to the PHL airport, as well.

The federal government should work to make all public transportation systems (rail, air, bus) work together.

Good idea.

Several airports along the NEC have Amtrak or local rail stations on site, or immediately adjacent. Off the top of my head, I believe they include Providence Airport, Newark Liberty, Philadelphia, and Baltimore Washington Marshall. Bridgeport's Sikorsky airport is somewhat near the NEC, as is LaGuardia, although neither have connections or access. Washington Reagan has a one seat connection via Metro.

Continental air has code-shared with Amtrak for several years, with connections to various destinations like Philadelphia and Albany
