Pullman "John Greenleaf Whittier" @ fox river
Author: eee

On the back of MELNP Elkhart-North Platte enroute to the Alamosa Passenger Car Shop, to start a new life. John Greenleaf Whittier is a 12 section - 1 drawing room Pullman built for service on the PRR. It is the most complete car in the heavyweight collection.

The photo of the freight train was taken by my daughter Emily. We were at the Fox Valley Folk Festival in Geneva, IL, where we heard Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen sing his song "Hurricane" about the destruction of the Key West Extension, a truly great train song....

What are plans for the car? Amtrak cert.? Charter?
Interior looks awesome for its age. Was on a trip with the
"Federal", oldest Amtrak certified car, built 1911.

It ran along at 110mph in Michigan like it was born to.
It's not your age, its your genes!

Yes, Labor Day 1935 -- the unnamed hurricane which grew out of nowhere, reaching what we could call a Category 5+ today, hitting the Keys with a force almost unimaginable. On some of the Keys, every structure, of any substance, was scrubbed from the bedrock. And yet, the rail bridges held . . . and hold to this day. The Seven Mile Bridge as it appears today, 77 years after being severed from mainland rail.

Ed, Word is that you will be using heavywieght open section Pullmans on your Chicago - NYC/New Orleans service. Would this car be one of them? AA

Steve's song captures the anguish of those on Matecumbe Key, and the desparate attempt to rescue people by train, which failed.

I thought Ed was stockpiling 6-3's, which are all-room cars....

Out of the dozen heavyweight sleepers we have acquired, 7 are all-room cars. There just aren't enough left.

The first 6-3 in the shop is Glen Summit, shown here.
