Sweet catch there on February 28, 2014. Nothing like a totally redesigned station with massive development in LoDo. Denver Union Station - an iconic transportation hub (in the making - Denver East Rail Line to Denver International Airport opens in 2016). Commuter bus service begins operation from the huge underground complex in May 2016. Amtrak the first user back in Union Station.

Amtrak Returns to Denver Union Station - The first Amtrak train, the California Zephyr, train 6, rolled back in the Denver Regional Transportation District (RTD) redeveloped Denver Union Station February 28, 2014 at Denver, CO. Amtrak 134 & 71 on train with PV Virginia City (deadhead move CA to Chicago, IL).

RTD Info-The Union Station project provides an opportunity to create a dense, mixed-use transit-oriented development and may include up to 2 million square feet of development. RTD, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG), and the City and County of Denver, partnered to create a master plan for the site. It will be the "Grand Central Station" of the metropolitan area, and will be the center of the regional transit system in the heart of the city.

The redevelopment will house a new 110-room hotel, and approximately ten independent retail shops and restaurants, as well as provide Amtrak and RTD services. The new site will include a 12,000 square foot public common area in the "Great Train Hall" and 40,000 square feet of outdoor plaza space. (Info courtesy Denver RTD)

Snowing and blowing in the Mile High City - Denver, Colorado, March 1, 2014. Amtrak passengers/crews/station personnel will get to experience inclement weather along track 4 when train 5, the California Zephyr arrives.

Looking forward to your post(ings)...

Based on your photos, particularly the second image, the new platform area looks very nice and appears to be a significant aesthetic improvement over what it replaced (I have been to Denver Union Station several times).

Thanks for taking the photos and posting them here.

Is this a stub station without run-through platform tracks? Looks like it can accept two conventional passenger trains.

How many cars can each track handle? If we restore the Pioneer and Desert Wind, how could the depot service a 20-25 car train?

The begs the question if it would have been responsible to build additional track for something which, since 1997 and currently, has no realistic chance of happening. It would take either a radical change in the economics of long-distance passenger trains for the private sector to restore Pioneer and/or Desert Wind service or a radical change in public and political attitudes towards government support of long-distance train service. While I would love to see both trains restored, nothing I've read on TO or elsewhere suggests that this is likely to happen in the near future. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

If the stars and moon align so that restoration of the Pioneer and/or Desert Wind is in the cards, why would it be assumed that they could only run as a combined train with the Zephyr between Chicago, Denver and Salt Lake City. Why not run them as three separate trains from Chicago to Portland/Seattle, Oakland and Los Angeles? One of them could possibly avoid Denver completely like Union Pacific's Cities trains.

Do they always back in..Sun AM seemed to be head first
Author: frntinplate

In all the years I have seen Amtrak CZ in DUT it has backed in. I was in Denver Sunday AM and at about 10 am noticed the CZ was in the station, but the locomotives were under the "shed" and the cars were out in the cold.

Funny to see a brand new train shed with the revenue cars out in the cold, with NO shed or platform shelter of any kind, but the power was protected from the snow.

Was this a one time only occurance? The passengers had better protection from rain and snow in the old temporary stop than with the new stop if this is to continue. Just wondering....
