They are going to run out of Pepsi, Pizza, and Cheeseburgers very soon. That is pretty much what they eat, and they can eat the snack car out of house and home.

Well, since their pilgrimage to Philmont aims to teach them about overcoming adversity and conquering challenges, I think a 3 hour delay in their arrival will be but a blip on their radar.

A number of their fellow scouts learned about adversity this week when a very large flash flood overcame their campsite at 4:30 in the morning. Four were swept away and one of those (a 13-year old from Sacramento) drowned. They were camped 20 feet above and quite a distance away from the small creek whose watershed received more than several inches of rain in a short time.

Wow, that's really sad to hear. I've only seen flash flooding once in my life, while sitting on the Chief outside of Gallup. There was a gully about 25 feet deep that had 23 feet of water rampaging through it. I was startled at how the entire gully was consumed with roiling, muddy water. I'm sorry for the loss of this young Scout.

Made the trip with my Troop six times via Amtrak (Utica, NY to Raton, 1832 fun-filled miles); everyone loved the train, it was part of the adventure

That "gully" is very likely the western NM Rio Puerco (not to be confused with the Rio Puerco SW of ABQ). The RR follows it from Church Rock east of Gallup into Arizona west of Gallup. 36 years ago this month a uranium mine waste tailings pond at Church Rock, NM failed releasing 1,100 tons and 93 million gallons of toxic and radioactive material into the stream. The wastewater ended up in northeastern Arizona in the Little Colorado River watershed. Depending on the reference source, the event is second only to Chenobyl and maybe Fukushima in the total amount of radiation released to the environment (I bet that little known fact is not included on the trip brochure riders on the Southwest Chief receive). I worked for the state at that time and collected water samples at Gallup. PPE was mostly rubber gloves and safety glasses, IIRC; we were not given radiation badges or scanned for radiation. Things are different now.

Interesting nugget of NM history there. Had never known about that. Looking at the area more closely, I believe it was Salt Water Wash as I recall it being a bit west of Gallup proper. The flood's proximity to the tracks was unnerving though it didn't endanger the tracks. It was really eerie because the cell(s) that caused it were not even visible in the area.

#3(1) lost another two hours between Raton and Las Vegas. Looking at the weather service radar and NWS ABQ, it looks like flash flood warnings/watches are out for that area, and west of ABQ it's looking bad also. We'll see how #4 does as it left Las Vegas at 5:23 MDT and by schedule it's about 1:50 to Raton.

Train crew was notified of flash flood warnings as they passed Fox, mp820.4 on the Glorieta Subdivision
(reported by a source on board the train).  The train lost two hours between Raton and Las Vegas, but
things got back to normal after that...now over five hours late.

More coffee needed -- summer is PDT (or MST in AZ).

I went to Philmont in 1954. Boarded L&N in Owensboro, KY to St. Louis. Missouri Pacific to Kansas City, then Santa Fe to Raton, NM. Ths L&N and Missouri Pacific equipment was quite old. Santa Fe had near new Budd cars. While we were there we did a conservation project. We built a stone dam across a wash. A big rain that night and the resulting flood washed away the dam. I will always remember my experiences there fondly. Frank Corley
