#14 Circling the Drain.
Author: ExStarlightHog

I see poor old 14 has fallen and can't get up.  Only 8 minutes late out of LAX, but over 3 1/2 hours down out of SLO.  Ouch!  The summer travel crowds waiting for it up the line will not be happy.  A late night for the engineer waiting for it in San Jose.  No midnight quit tonight.

Word on another board is they got rocked and a broken windshield in the Van Nuys area.

Power was turned at Montalvo on the Metrolink wye.

Not sure if a crew change was involved after the rocking of if they traveled at reduced speed to Montalvo to turn the power.

Just another day on the railroad.

I can understand the typical railroad stuff that can delay a train, but rock throwing? I hope they found who the culprits are and get 'em!

I agree. After Amtrak NE Regional 188's derailment, this is not the time to mess around with the engineers up front!

Yeah, don't you miss it, JV?  haha...
Good to see the "circling the drain" post return again for old time's sake!

Hi Mark.  Yes, I sure miss that laying around the crew room in San Jose until 11 or midnight.  At least it wouldn't have been me tonight if I was still at it.  Remember I did the Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday 11 & 14 thing.  Doesn't Byers work the Monday, Wednesday, Friday job?  Take care out there and stay safe.  Always keep an eye out for those ever present "weed weasels".  Ha!

Rocked near Oxnard (spikes actually- not rocks), and units had to be turned. This was done at Montalvo (near Ventura).
Later they hit debris on track near SLO for bonus delay.
All of this snowballed into T&E crews running out of hours.... all and all: a bad day on 14!

You could say they were "spiked" then, eh?

I'd heard it happened in the 429 area, which is about 25 miles south of Oxnard.  Several other trains reported being rocked in that area throughout the day.  I'm just glad I'm on vacation, that could have been me dealing with that mess.

That would put it around Taco Flats  ( Oak Park) east of Moorpark. Nothing good living in that area.

Broken windshield on the trailing unit of #11 through Olympia/Lacey, WA this morning so it's not yet been fixed.
