Virgin Rail is automatically giving refunds for train delays
Author: johnpage

Richard Branson isn't kidding around about his trains running on time. And, apparently other passenger train operators in England will be doing the same.

This is a welcome expansion of the British "Delay Repay" program
which has already existed and is used by about half of the UK's
passenger rail operators. Until now, the compensation has been by
voucher, toward future travel; and required a request by the passenger.

Now, on Virgin and perhaps other passenger rail operators, it will
automatically be refunded to the credit card for the user to spend as desired.

"Delay Repay" compensation varies by train operator.
The best compensation - including Virgin's:

--up to a 50% refund on a single ticket for delays of between
30 minutes and an hour

--up to a 100% refund on a single ticket for a delay of between
one and two hours

--up to a 100% refund on the cost of a roundtrip ticket for delays
of more than two hours

Note that in the UK, the passenger rail operators do not own their own tracks,
unlike Amtrak in the NEC (Nothing Else Counts).

RENFE (Spain) takes punctuality of the AVE trains seriously:
If your AVE train is delayed, you are also entitled to a refund : 50% if your train is late between 16 and 30 minutes and 100% refund if it is more than 30 minutes delayed.

I wonder how that will work for passengers holding rail passes bought outside the U.K.?
