Acela Window hit and shattered by "object"
Author: andersonb109

Reported by Fox and Yahoo News, an Amtrak Acela train (no train number given) was hit by an "object" which shattered a widow. Photos show passengers inside the train sitting next to the widow in question. Incident happened near Philadelphia. TV report was from 30th Street Station. Hm, remember the train 188 incident where some thought a thrown object could have distracted the engineer. Not sure how this area relates to the derailment scene. What is wrong with someone who thinks this is a good idea.

It was northbound Acela 2222, hit by object in Bridesburg, between Philly and Trenton.
Looks like it was hit by something with a very sharp point. Those windows are pretty strong!

Those are extremely strong,  shatter resistant windows (note that despite the subject line this window was not "shattered" in the sense that the window did not fragment and spray over the interior compartment).  Whatever hit that window was not your usual thrown rock or brick, but appeared to be generally aimed and projected at a high velocity.
I would agree that it was probably "pointed" to concentrate the pressure at point-of-impact.

Whoever did this put some thought and effort into their "work."  :-(

But the media insists on reviewing the crash, again.

At some point might it be prudent to erect guard towers with snipers to do the unthinkable?

To think open-windowed MP54's and P70's used to pass through there.

Someone failed to notice that the conductor was running the train!

Bridesburg is a neighborhood in northeast Philadelphia.

Bridesburg also a Septa station stop is about 2 miles TT east of Frankford and Ford double reverse curves ... there's a geographical difference between the Bridesburg location and the 2nd St to Front St location (site of the 188 impact incident) ... the RofW around 2nd St and Front St has the RofW in a cut where there are 2 overhead bridges and elevated hills on one side and multi story vacant bldgs on the other side of the tracks, whereas the Bridesburg location has the tracks on an elevated RofW with UG bridges over city streets and no OH bridges ... the area is fenced, so something thrown at a train has to be done with tremendous force being it doesn't have gravity to assist in velocity ... Mitch Goldman's latest photos on this forum from a few days ago showing the city through the catenary were taken at the now closed Wissonoming Septa station showing about a mile TT east of the Bridesburg Septa station ...

Bridesburg, though by any non-Philadelphia/non-Northeast urban standards isn't a GREAT neighborhood,
isn't a total armpit like the area through which Amtrak 188 passed just prior to its deadly crash.

But thugs with guns have cars, too...

Back in the time of the 188 attack, there was discussion about somebody using a heavy duty sling shot or small catapult to fling rocks or scrap at the 188 train, the Septa, and the Acela.  All hit within a similar period, and possibly from a distance..

If the location of the newest attack is up high and away, that could lend some support to a mechanical assist for the rock / scrap etc or whatever was used.

The guy that has a (it's not a link or a lookup so I think it is ok to cite in this instance) YouTube slingshot channel has made and demonstrated some pretty formidable rubber powered weapons that could certainly do the job.

we can conclude that Mr Bostian's actions weren't intentional ... if there was any inkling of that, Mr Bostian would be laid up in a jail cell right now on manslaugter or murder charges ... it's one of those instances where only ONE person knows the answer to the One Big question ... whether that ONE BIG question ever gets answered ... only time will tell ... there's also really no other way way to put it ...  “lost situational awareness.” is the term that will most likely be used by the NTSB as the DIRECT CAUSE of the accident ... i've heard the term used by some Amtrak engineers and also BLE union people ... doesn't mean he's guilty of anything or a claim to any wrongdoing on the part of Mr Bostian ... the sub causes relative to Mr Bostian being in that condition during that situation are what were/are previously/presently being formulated by the NTSB in the past/upcoming months prior to the release of the NTSB's accident conclusion statement ...

If he was coldcocked diving from whatever broke the window, even he doesn't know.

Loss of situational awareness has been mentioned as a potential result of attacks on pilots by people focusing lasers. The pilot is shocked, blinded, and disoriented.
