How did the elephants ride home?
Author: march_hare

Media reports are that Barnum and Bailey stopped using elephants in their shows This weekend, with the last performance in Providence RI.   Animals will go to a sanctuary in Florida.

Both the the red unit and blue unit had at least some elephants, and this is the beginning of the tour season, so this brings up a question:

How are the elephants getting home?  Are they going to run 3-4 car trains from each show location to Florida?  March them home like Hannibal Barca?  Rent them out for the Republican convention?

Anybody  have info on this?

From Providence, the entire train went back to Florida - the will be putting a new show together..   From Wilkes-Barre, they went by truck.  The train went to Manchester, NH and has the elephant cars, but they are empty/

So will the trains be a couple cars shorter from now on?

No, the cars will remain, but now they will be carrying PETA members who have been trained to take the elephant's place in their acts.

Starting in about another month, YES they'll be cut down just a bit.  The Red Unit's elephants were trucked back to Fla. this week (as per the discussion threads here and elsewhere); the Blue Unit's elephants are aboard their train on the "Home-Run" from Providence RI to Ellenton FL (actually, Uceta Yard, Tampa according to some sources), where they will disemark and join the rest of the herd at the show's elephant conservation farm in central Florida.  RUMOR MILL:  it's being tossed around that the Walt Disney Co. may seek to acquire Feld Entetainment and all its shows (RBBB, Monster Truck, Disney On Ice, Stan Lee's Marvel Universe Live, and more), but they won't touch RBBB until every animal act there is GONE -- as they don't want to be hounded by PETA.  If that deal is real, and they get it, RBBB's animals are all going away.  Let's hope that does NOT happen!

What good is a circus without animals?

The Ringling Brothers “season” usually begins at the start of the New Year. The circus debuts a new show each year, and it tours for two years. There’s a new show for the “blue” circus one year, and one for the “red” circus the next year.

The Legends show has actually been touring for 2-1/2 years. The last show for the elephants this past weekend was actually the last for the “Legends” show as well. That final show was in Providence, R.I., where, two years ago, several female performers were injured when the rigging for an act called the human chandelier (I believe) failed. As I remember, the show took a brief break while acts were “retooled” to replace the injured performers.

The final show for the elephants was the 900th show for Legends, and the ringmaster, on the live stream, said that the elephants would return to Florida along with the performers on (I assume) the train. Some of the performers from this show, along with new ones, are beginning rehearsals on a new “Out of This World” show, which combines acts on the floor and ice surfaces, along with aerial acts, and some animal acts. It sounds as though they want to be more competitive with Cirque du Soleil.

But while this show is ending, this is not the normal time for the end of a “season.” The seasons always end in the winter, and both the red and blue shows begin the New Year with shows moving up the East Coast before spreading out across the country.

From the Ringling website, it kooks as though the “Out of This World” tour starts in mid-summer on the West Coast. Perhaps the fact that they are changing the show so drastically led to the decision to take a longer break.

The elephants that performed in Providence last weekend definitely left on the train; I took my son to see the elephants getting on board.

This is such B.S. that a group off radical extremists can dictate what a private show can or can't do. I love animals as much as the next guy. And I've been to Africa and seen them in the wild. They are being killed left and right for their ivory. At least in the circus they are protected and cared for by people who love them. Screw PETA.

Interesting. As coincidence would have it, I saw the RBBX blue unit passing Virginia Ave. tower in DC, last night (May 3) about 8pm. Didn't know it was the last train ride for the elephants.

Humorous Subject Line for the "Passenger Train" forum...

Let's see...from Providence there are only Acelas and Regionals so hopefully they went Business Class where there's a little more leg and elbow room. :-)

There's plenty of elephants in DC to fill in, and a plethora of clowns
