Tie replacement on NJT's RVL
Author: Pattenburg

It is day two of NJT's tie replacement project on the Raritan Valley Line as a Kershaw Ballast Regulator goes about its task of spreading ballast just west of CP BRAD (RVL MP 37). On Monday NJT Train 5179 is seen approaching Whitehouse Station (RVL MP 44.2) only seven minutes past is scheduled arrival time of 4:09 according to the audio message that was heard. Train 5179 would be the first train through the work zone's time frame of 9:45 AM to 3:30 PM.

railroads have a tendency to drop excess ballst in locations where there already is an adequate ballst section ...ballsat regulkators like the Kershaw machine can work the ballst in a defined area but if there's excess ballast all they do is push the ballst further away from track center sometimes further than their machine and collect it when working that section in the future ... now there are MW equipment manufacturing companies like Plasser who have developed machines namely wha they call a BDS Ballast Distribution System that can collect excess ballast from one location and transfer the stone to a totally different location miles and miles away ... it uses conveyors and rail hopper cars that are couples between the 2 end units to carry the stone with the machine to areas that have an inadequate ballast section actually saving the company money from ordering more ballast ... below is a link for the Plasser BDS ...

Pattenburg, thank you for posting pictrues of the RVL.  I lived in Raritan Bourough from 11/70 to 1/78.  First home was fairly close to what is now CP BRAD.  Yes there were two tracks and ABS west of raritan back then, but track was jointed rail and needed much work.  Railroad looks much better now.

John
