The Cardinal

Does anyone know why No.51 is running so late in Indiana this morning? I rode the train last week and it was about thirty minutes behind schedule but nothing like the four and a half hours it shows on transitdocs. Thanks.

It was running OT last night, so it must have run into problems west of WV.

Conversely, the EB #50 lost 2 1/2 hours enroute yesterday after leaving Chicago OT.    I am riding tonights version and hope to arrive close to the expected time at my destination

I'm guessing the Cardinal will turn at Indianapolis this morning. Passengers on 50 from Chi tonight will most likely bus from Chicago to Indianapolis and then board the Cardinal.

KCS 4152 in the Lead.  That poor ole Amtrak unit must have blown up!!!!!  Mr. Moorman cannot get a Locomotive rehab program online soon enough.

How unfortunate to see an anti Amtrak Edog post debunked

If you want to see an odd consist go find 51 today. Has amtrak 519 leading a baggage, viewliner, coach, KCS loco, P42 with normal Cardinal consist.

Totally weird. I was supposed to be on that train but changed the trip date months ago. Hopefully the next 51 (Friday / Saturday) does a lot better.

I've called Amtrak a few times throughout the day and they insist the train will leave on time this evening. I bet they will send a superliner trainset out as an train 50 so far as DC. I don't imagine they have spare viewliners laying around dormant for events like this.

I was wondering about this as well.  From looking at the schedule, I think from a crew standpoint, it would have been a different crew outbound on 50 tonight from the crew that brought 51 in today - so crew should not be an issue.    It most definitely would be a different trainset.   50 is due out at 545pm, right?  That is only an hour and a half from now.

EDIT: 51 is not yet to Rensalear, IN.  If 50 leaves anywhere close to OT, should make for an interesting meet in NW IN.    WIll they hold 50 until 51 arrives CHI?

EDIT:  50 left Chicago 22 min late this evening.  Anyone know the consist?

Had a cinder brick dropped on us east of Indy one night.  Took out the engineer's windshield.  Fortunately there were no injuries.  It made for a LONG trip though, as we had to limp on to Cincy at a significantly reduced speed and then sit at the Cincy station for hours waiting for CSX to decide what rent-a-wreck they wanted to part with to take over on the head end.

Cardinal is slowest Amtrak train in Amtrak System.

Amtrak in CHI used some cars off 49 including the sleepers to make up 50, while 51's train was integrated into what turned for 48 Thursday.

Well, some train has to occupy that spot (slowest).  Might as well be the Cardinal.

In the train's defense, it does operate through a lot of mountainous territory in WVA and VA, as well as CSX trackage with a top speed of 60 mph all the way to Cincinnati.

It does serve a need, however.  I will not post further on this thread or argue about costs per passenger, etc.  It is pointless.  However, in WV this train is more important than many others to the folks who live along the route.

And, if we kill the bird, railcity, will you want to kill the "new" slowest train as well?

CSX Railroad is downgrade most of line with no business. CSX said to 30 mph route in next year or so. without no Coal Business or another business.
