Chicago Union Station: Tracks #7, #9, and #11 Out of Service
Author: kevink

The following is from an email alert from Metra:

Metra Chicago Union Station customers, please be advised that starting at 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017, tracks #7 and #9 will be removed from service until further notice, so that contractors working for the station owner can perform needed maintenance. Track #11 also will be taken out of service each night at 7 p.m. and will remain out until 5:30 a.m. the following morning. Metra customers who normally enter or exit Union Station from Madison Street can use the platform entrances for tracks #5, #13 or #15, which will remain open during this work. Metra customers are advised while these platform closures are in effect there will be numerous platform changes that affect all trains arriving and departing from the north end of Chicago Union Station. Please check the gate boards prior to boarding your train. During the platform closures, many trains will utilize platforms that do not have direct access to Madison Street. The following Milwaukee North Line trains will use platforms that do not have direct Madison Street access: 2114, 2141 and 2137. On the Milwaukee West Line, trains 2208, 2212, 2215, 2220, 2224 and 2229 will use platforms that do not have direct Madison Street access. On the North Central Service, trains 104, 108, 109, 113, and 116 will use platforms without direct Madison Street access. Customers using these trains will need to access their platforms through the Union Station North Concourse. Passengers can access the north concourse from Madison Street by walking down an open platform or by using the Chicago Union Station entrances at Adams Street, Canal Street, or Clinton Street. Metra and Amtrak regret any inconvenience.

Closures appear to be more repairs to the deck over the tracks. See earlier story at: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?4,4119849,4120880#msg-4120880

No idea. I suspect that they did a complete inspection last fall while completing any critical repairs and now they are going back in to address problems identified during the inspection.

30th St Station went through the same process ... took 4 years between steel replacement, steel rehabilitaton, stripping, lead paint mitigation, sand blasting, primer coats and finish paint coat ... all 11 tracks were out of service or fouled during the 4 year process with tracks being worked on 2 atta time ...

I was not aware of access to Union Station from Madison St - how does that work?

Seems like a nice way to reduce walking in bad weather for some folks.

Thanks.

Here you are: http://bit.ly/2iMXDz4

Straight down each set of stairs to a platform.
Good way to avoid Amtrak's Kindergarten line-up nonsense, especially if boarding a Hiawatha. I don't know if I'd be that bold with the Empire builder.

Kind of like the CNW suburban entrance, except you go down instead of up.

About the only thing that looks familiar from when I lived in Chicago is the old Daily News building.

Thanks.

Yep, that and the Civic Opera Building across the river from the Daily News. There's also the building that fronts on the east side of Canal Street beweeen Washington and Randolph Streets.

Butler Brothers buildings.  Rail content:  After the C&NW tore down NorthWestern station,
they moved their offices into one of the Butler Bros. buildings.
