Why should sleeping car passengers pay for food in the cafe car, when their sleeping car fare already includes a $40 boxed meal?

Because they got hungry between meals and wanted a snack?

Give me a break.

I don't pay $600 (many cases more) to stay at a Hampton Inn.

La Croix? Ciabata? Chobani? Hummus? Sahale? Haribo? Chilaquiles? Kashi? Tomatillo?

I eschew food I can't pronounce. Grits survive.

Imagine, having to go to a miserable Am-café, (with one attendant), while a brand new dining car rides along unused.

This is a shameful downgrading of this train -- which should prove to everyone that Anderson intensions is to damage Amtrak.

Hopefully Congress will become aware of what he is doing==and use political pressure behind closed doors to stop this bad apple.

What makes you think he isn't doing what some in congress want?

Huhhh???? How can it difficult to pronounce "Hummus" or "Kashi?"

You will never get it.

First off, the new cafe car menu is pricier than ever, and that option was always available - we knew that. They didn't cut the sleeping car rates when they got rid of the diner in favor of cheap, cold, and inadequate meals. It's called bait and switch, not entitlement. The fact is, they are not saving much money by their own admission of $3 million per year for the two trains, assuming all ticket revenue is retained. Prepared food wholesale costs more than raw food. They are merely outsourcing the job of the cook, not eliminating it. It also has to be individually wrapped and packaged, which costs more money, blowing away most of what they have saved on the staff they just laid off.

Congress gave him the largest appropriation for the national network outside the NEC. Saving $1.5 million per train on this is a very stupid economy. If ticket revenue declines just 5%, it was for naught.

Think about this - one Hampton Inn employee can set up
an entire breakfast buffet and serve many more customers
then Amtrak. We are talking hot eggs, sometimes scrambled
and other times omelets; breakfast meats; hot oatmeal;
waffles and everything else that's associated with Breakfast.
Why can't something like this be accomplished on Amtrak?

Also at some other chains, like some Holiday In Express.

That is a buffet set-up with no portion controls. Amtrak does not have that.

After 6am, we would see one hotel employee scampering around, but what goes on to prepare all that, the hard-boiled eggs in the fridge, hot eggs of some sort, sausages, pancake goop, all the cold food, multiple coffee urns. Can that one person be there at 4am preparing all that, or is there other help ?

I average 40 nights a year, most all in Hampton Inns. Usually I see two people working about an hour before opening time for breakfast, preparing the buffet, etc. and then cleaning tables, emptying trash, etc. Funny thing to me is when you stay in 'full service' hotels at $200-300 a night, breakfast usually costs about $25 extra. Not to mention parking charges, etc. Somebody has to pay for all the usually vacant conference rooms and other 'amenities'.

They'll nail you for picking up the room phone too, but that has backfired since most have cellphones. They figure it's expense account and a write-off. Not much of that on Amtrak LD trains.
