Passenger Trains > Surfliner 573 vs forklift in SJ CapistranoDate: 08/16/19 08:57 Surfliner 573 vs forklift in SJ Capistrano Author: trainjunkie Surprised this wasn't mentioned yesterday since it looks like it took out the Veterans "cabbage" (90208). Image came from a discussion group on FB. Article has the usual "poor trespasser, bad train" theme. A forklift is nothing to mess with and should never be fouling a main line.

Posted from Android Date: 08/16/19 09:40 Re: Surfliner 573 vs forklift in SJ Capistrano Author: PasadenaSub That's a shame, as the 90208 has been in Southern California for about 12-13 years - first appearing on the 798 and 799 Surfliners that ran from LA to SLO while in Phase III paint.

Somebody said it was a Form B and not everybody was fully in the clear. I could be wrong, just repeating what I read elsewhere. One of the articles I read said the forklift was stuck on the tracks. If true, and there was a Form B that the train was authorized through, someone is going to have some serious explaining to do. Date: 08/16/19 10:31 Re: Surfliner 573 vs forklift in SJ Capistrano Author: Mudrock It really screwed up the railroad so much that I had gotten on Metrolink 815 and it was announced that we would be bussed south of Laguna Niguel. I knew that getting off there I could take Metrolink 806 back to Santa Ana at 3:26 PM. Metrolink 641 and 609 were cancelled . So got got just 34.8 rail miles on this bad day of train riding.

"Cabbage" is what I've always heard the 90208 to be (former locomotive). Cab car = more of a passenger car with an operator up front. If I have the terms off, I apologize. Date: 08/16/19 12:34 Re: Surfliner 573 vs forklift in SJ Capistrano Author: Kimball That explains why I spotted this train in the MOW siding just north of the Laguna Niguel station this morning. Shot was taken about 7:40 as the regular Metrolink southbound train passed by. All I have ever seen there before has been specialized MOW equipment, so I knew something was up! From Cabot Road, I did not spot the damage.
The collision location is in or just after a right-hand curve heading north. There has been ongoing work there to widen the ROW to accomodate eventual double track. The ROW is sandwiched between the riverbed and Camino Capistrano road, so crews have been driving pilings etc. to support the road so the slope can be cut back. Sightlines would have been pretty short, I think. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/16/19 12:41 by Kimball. I recall a MOW(?) worker was hit and killed about 12-16 years ago. Under the SR73 freeway, approx across from the Camino Capistrano In-N-Out. About 1/2 mile south of the Laguna Niguel station. Is there a memorial plaque there? Details? Date: 08/16/19 19:11 Re: Surfliner 573 vs forklift in SJ Capistrano Author: atsf121 I hope no one is hurt, that is some serious damage. I’m glad I got a photo of that unit a while back, worried it might be out of service for quite some time.
