Passenger Trains > Amfleet car with black roof spotted

Watching the Ashland Virginia rail cam this morning I noticed a northbound regional train with an amfleet car that now has a black roof 

I assume this might have been placed there to prevent water leaks but man does it look ugly!

think it could have been repaired to look the same by placing stainless steel back on the roof?

i took a screen shot of it but trainorders is not letting me down load it 

if you want to view go to the rail cam at 842am this morning and look at it 

maybe someone with better technical abilities can grab the shot and post

Was it one of the business or official cars ? 

Strange, most transit authorities use a grey paint/sealant that somewhat blends with the trainless steel.  The NJT Arrow III's just got the grey paint of shame.

No it was in the middle of the train 

Was it one of the former wrapped cars?
If not, yea, they're getting old and leaky. If the material sprayed on it was black, it beats getting wet. Replacing with stainless really isn't practical or an option, unless you find a donor Amfleet car with a perfect roof.

Does water penetrate advertising shrink wrap ? 

Third car from head end - car number 82624. 72 seat coach.

There is another black roofed Amfleet coach in an earlier northbound train at 07:23 EDT. It's the fifth car of a nine car train.

there are white roofing materials

Roof color can affect air conditioning. Black absorbs heat while white reflects it.
Which is why you see so many white automobiles in the Southwest!

 Back in the 1970's Southern Railway's Southern Crescent operated with some coaches that had black roofs. I do not know the reason for this.

It was Flex Seal.

Several roads, including the Southern, ACL, NYC and New Haven seemed to favor black roofs on their Pullman-built stainless sheathed cars.

It's also common on cars that have a black roof to use a white stripe in the middle to decrease the heat loading inside the car. From most angles, the roof appears black.

I had never noticed that before.

That is Tioga Pass, it’s used occasionally by the Canadian Military on equipment moves with security personnel aboard.

I thought it was the U.K. military traveling to their training site in western Canada.
