I didn't catch the entire joke but last night (12/4/2000) Jay Leno's
monologue included an Amtrak Acela joke (if you can call it that). He
said something like:

"Amtrak will debut their high-speed 150MPH service on December 11th...
The next day they will have the memorial service."

It won't, and like I said before, Joseph Vanrich is going to be dumbfounded since he thinks 200 MPH trains are the only way passenger trains will succeed here and it won't. Besides, look at what always comes through most of the time in the winter, even if they are late, passenger trains, so don't even think amtrak's gonna go downhill.

As shocking as this might sound, I thought the joke was funny and laughed.

Guess because it wasn't based on an actual accident, rather just on humorous view of potential bad luck.

And judging from the postings on this board, Amtrak's had some heavy bad luck with derailments, killing tresspassers/suicidals, engines dying out, cars wearing out their components, etc.
