Passenger Trains > Amtrak Transformer fire Bronx, NY: 1 dead, 2 injured

An Amtrak electric traction transformer exploded at a Bronx Substation at about 11am today (12/5) killing one Amtrak worker and injuring two others.

@AmtrakNECAlerts (on Twitter), in its usual fashion, is using the anodyne term "police activity" to explain the rampant delays east of NYP.

Something less obfuscatory, like "substation fire," or maybe "electrical outage," the latter being the reason Amtrak can't operate between NYP and New Rochelle.

Amtrak statement:

“We are deeply saddened to report the death of an Amtrak employee. The incident happened at approximately 11:05 a.m. at a substation just outside of New York City. There are reports of two additional nonlife-threatening employee injuries. Trains are being delayed through the area as local authorities respond. A full investigation is underway.”

Once family notification is made, yes I agree. Not a second before.

You are spot on!  Those that think an immeduate release of information don't have a clue on how accidents resulting in deaths or injuries are properly handled.  To announce a fatality before proper family notifications are made only causes angst among other employees families wondering if their loved ones are dead.

I had a grandmother remind me until the day she passed that she found out about her grandsons death on the news.

In this day and age of instant communication, proper notification of line of duty deaths and serious injuries is and will be a constant challenge. Agencies and companies holding back information until they have confirmation have my total support.

So yes, maybe not police activity, but something else that is more appropriate but not too specific.

The New York Post, of all the media, has been most specific about what happened:

"An Amtrak worker was electrocuted and killed while performing work at a substation in The Bronx on Thursday, police and law enforcement sources said.

The incident occurred at around 11 a.m. at the site at White Plains Road and Unionport Road in Parkchester, where Con Edison and Amtrak have facilities.

The employee was working on an electrical line when he put a ladder up against a transformer that he thought was off, but wasn’t, and got electrocuted, law enforcement sources said.  The worker died at the scene."

What the hell is wrong with you people? An employee was killed and others were injured, and all you can do is bitch about the way the delays were anounced? UNREAL jst3751 is about the only one with a clue on this thread.

Yes I do have an agenda, it is called be respectful and quit bitching and moaning and complaining about the stupidest things.
