March 1970 #2  EB San Francisco Chief and #24.  Even if it is a SF Chief.

NIce shots of these passenger trains above which were manned by the Fort Madison, IA  based train and engine crews that worked to and from Kansas City, MO.

I first was writing that Santa Fe's daytime Chicago-Kansas City coach counterparts to the Chief were not Chiefs, but the Kansas Cityan and Chicagoan...

However, from 1950, they did operate a nighttime full-service Kansas City Chief. It ran almost totally in the dark so there are few photos. In 1958 the eastbound was folded into the Chief, which had almost the same schedule. The westbound survived until the loss of its Post Office contract in 1968, five years after the football team took its name.

Amtrak pays homage to the racially insensitive image with the name of the Southwest  "Chief" train from the distant past, isn't it high time to replace it ?

And I always understood the leaders of a certain Indian tribe (oh, sorry, maybe a "indigenous group") were pleased to be represented by the AT&SF Railway.  If I recall correctly, many of these peoples were very good employees of this organization throughout its operation and likewise, it providing them many good railroad retirements, free travel passes, etc.  Something many social networking millennials would expect given freely to them today.

Is the second (blue) unit a freight F45? 
Does the lead unit (FP45 I assume) have a steam generator in it?  If so, does the second unit has a steam line passing through it?

I think this has come up before, I believe the first "baggage car" is a steam generator car, you can see stacks in roofline.

OUCH.....my eyes have been summarily offended...........(I would roll them, but that would probably hurt too...........................)

I believe that Santa Fe had a good relationship with the NA nations along it's route. Especially the Navajo. The intention on the "warbonnet" scheme was to honor that history. Of course, the railroads were also viewed as part of the problem that brought hoards of settlers to the areas the railroad served. Santa Fe passenger car interiors were unique in that they often carried that the NA theme with traditional colors and artwork that honored both the area and the Peoples that inhabited those places.  GN did the same (Pacific Northwest Peoples) and MILW (Midwest) to a lesser extent. 

We view all of this through the filter of time and an era of cowboy and indian movies which portrayed NA (native americans) as either savages or "noble warriors". I think it is best to let them judge if railroads like Santa Fe gave either a positive image, or something less. 

In ABQ in 1970 I stood by 3 FP45s pulling an eastbound 19-car combined Super Chief/El Cap.  The rails are on a slight uphill grade at this point.  Two things I remember to this day:  One, the ground absolutely shook as those three beasts roared out of ABQ, and Two, by the time the last car came by, it was "haulin.'  Memories!

Santa Fe had 40 F45s the last 20 had steam line. some also had ats {automatic train stop } some photos of a F45 leading a santa fe passenger.      retired santa fe /amtrak enger
