Cardinal/Hospital train plus other Chicago Amtrak moves today
Author: inCHI

A few catches from today before and after work:

1. The Saluki/391 heads across the the South Branch of the Chicago River on the St. Charles Air Line. The old bridge it is crossing over didn't use to be this visible prior to recent construction work.
2. Heading past the tower at 16th St.
3. There is a real zig zag to the track here, note the twist between the two superliners.

4. Tonight's edition of the Cardinal has the Beech Grove consist leading it, offering the strangest mix of Amtrak equipment in one train that regularly runs (I'd guess.) In this edition:

B32-8BWH 519
Horizon coach
Viewliner baggage
Superliner (can't spot which type for all of these, look like coaches.)
Superliner
Superliner
Heritage baggage
Superliner
P42 123
Amfleet II coach
Amfleet II coach
Amfleet II diner lite
Viewliner baggage
Viewliner II bag-dorm

Can't wait for the days to get longer, when the cluster of Amtrak departures around 6pm will then be in daylight.

5. After the Cardinal, this interesting consist was turned on the wye. Four elephant style P42's
6. Then Viewliner Diner, Viewliner Baggage, Viewliner Diner, Viewliner Baggage

Didn't have the most ideal camera gear for low light. Last shots:

7/8. 354 left with a charger on both the front and rear. For years most of the Wolverines have been run with one P42

I would assume those extra P42's and Viewliners came off the Acela move.

2 coach baggage and a transition sleeper ahead of the baggage car and a standard coach betweens the heritage baggage and the P42.

Soon after, this train would run into "mechanical issues" south of Lafayette. Out of Indianapolis little over 4 hours late and still running 4 hours late as of early Sunday morning, 2/23/2020.

- In the conist for Beech Grove, the Superliners were all Coaches and at least one was a Coach/Baggage (if not two). There was a third Superliner coach heading to Beech Grove that had lower level seating on it.
- The Cardinal section of the train that would continue on to Washington DC/NYC had the two Amfleet II coaches, Amfleet Diner Lite (should be a Viewliner Sleeper Lounge, but that's another story for another day), the Viewliner I Sleeper, and Viewliner II Bag-Dorm, which appears active. Small consist for the Cardinal, and what onboard staff there is, they would be taking roomettes in Viewliner Bagg/Dorm to hopefully free up a couple of rooms, if that, in the Viewliner Sleeper.

Please see my comments above. There are no coaches with a low level diaphragm on one end and a high level on the other as you are implying.

P42 123 had been leading on the Silver Starvation last week.
