UP Inspection Special yesterday led by an SD70M
Author: highgreengraphics

Yesterday's 10-car Council Bluffs to Denver UP inspection Special was led by clean SD70M 4222 (note one-half of 8444), almost replacing the Cheyenne Frontier Days train as this would have been the time of year that it ran. Photo 1 - Departing Cheyenne, WY under the C&S Bridge. Photo 2 - Leaving steam-era water tank-dominated Speer, WY, beginning down the ex-DP Greeley Subdivision. Photo 3 - Whistling through downtown Eaton, CO. One Mooore...

Photo 4 - Rumbling over the long bridge spanning the South Platte River and associated greenery between Evans and LaSalle, CO. It was to go west on the Moffat Line today. Thanks to JS for the headsup. Happy inspection railfanning! === === = === JLH

A clean good running 20 years old SD70M. I'll take it.

GREAT pics and super effort to obtain them. The UP never ceases to amaze with amazing, clean livery and positive image.

Hey, how about some 79mph-geared SD70 series locomotives for Amtrak?  Why not paint several of them in the Armour yellow with red and grey with that big American flag on the side?  Now that would alert the potential vehicular roadkill at grade crossings to watch the hell out!

Based on the number of grade crossing "accidents" that happen on UP tracks with UP locomotives, I don't think the paint scheme makes a bit of difference.

Where would the HEP for the passenger cars come from?

Wrong! The idiots at the grade crossings pay absolutely no attention to such paint jobs. Hell, some don't even stop for the lowered gates and flashing red lights!

Lets analyze this for a second...if these "vehiclular roadkill" are getting hit by the FRONT of the locomotive, how would anything painted on the SIDE help "alert" them.  Maybe if we install flashing red lights and gates...oh what a minute we do that already.  If you either can't see or just don't care about flashing red lights and gates, why would anything painted on the train help.  (Yes it might help prevent someone from hitting the side of the train, but overall that is very small percentage of the incidents).
