Passenger Trains > Old reliable to the rescue

Old reliable P32-8 comes to the rescue on the Hiawatha 330 in Glenview this morning as a result of a bad ordered charger 4622 needing to be removed in Chicago Wednesday night. It's gonna be a huge mess when these chargers die 1/2 way across the country on the long distance trains in 2021.........

338/339/342 today for 517 (leading 338 and 342) and then it should be swapped tonight for another charger before 331 tomorrow morning. 90219, 90221, 90222, 90368, 90413 and  are all bad ordered in Chicago. That's why the Hiawatha has been running with two chargers for over a month. No cabbages available.

Five Cabbages sidelined needing repair. Soon there will be six. Supposedly Amtrak is not laying off any workers at Beech Grove so why is it that the cabbages can't either be fixed in Chicago or sent to Beech Grove? There is maintenance money available, lets not get too foolish. The Chargers and their reliability are another issue. Aren't the LD Chargers supposed to be a little bit different than the current ones used in corridor service - bigger fuel tank or something? Not that this may mean a darn thing for reliability (although one can never be too sure if the locomotives are fueled up!).

I know crews don't like them, but Amtrak has certainly gotten its monies-worth out of the P32's.  A lot to be said for buying off-the-shelf.

Definitely not new...

From what Ive seen on live chats and cams they do seem to need service quite a bit more than the p units and they arent hauling long consists huge distances. Usually they haul 3-4 cars unless its California surf line where they seem to be going in and out of service a lot. Its time we changed over to all electric anyway diesels have just to many moving parts as they say .
