Flew on United today. I think their policy is more effective-- if you're not wearing a mask, you will not be getting on the airplane. We'll provide you with a mask if you don't have one. Take it off after boarding (other than to eat or drink) you might be stripped of your travel privileges.

FWIW, Ross tells us of the dismal numbers his employee friends on the LDTs see. Well, I'm here to tell you all but about 10 seats on this flight were occupied. And I felt completely safe. EVERY passenger was in a mask, and no BS like the guy with it hung over his ears and not even covering his nose and mouth.

Aircraft was electrostatic cleaned before boarding. Cleaners hit the surfaces, as well. And we were still handed a sanitizing wipe to hit anything we wanted. And not some cheap little finger wipe like at a BBQ restaurant. A thick, well saturated towel that cleaned up everything I could think of to wipe at my seat and the one next to me.

Biggest change I noted-- it is QUIET! The cabin service is much more simple, and people are masked up and don't talk. It was possibly the most pleasant flight I've taken.

I honestly felt safer on that airplane than at the average restaurant. So unless you are completely avoiding any outings, I encountered nothing that made me uncomfortable. And this is how travel will have to be to get people back.

Mike; I flew a round trip on Delta back in August. Our flights were only about half full but, beyond that, my experience mirrored yours. I told people I actually felt safer in the airports and on the planes than I did walking into a Home Depot at the time.

My good friend in the Amtrak reservation department tells my future bookings for the Oct.-Dec. period remain " very light". Not surprisingly lots of call in prospective customers looking to book round trips or connections through Chicago end up not booking due to the tri-weekly schedule. My WAG is that the tri-weekly alone will cost at least 40% of future business to disappear.

Flew Delta last week DC-MPLS-Duluth on flights that were totally uneventful.  Everyone was masked up, everyone maintaining reasonable distance, no complaining, no theatrics.  Everyone just going about their business in a reasonably normal manner.  I felt perfectly safe.

it will be interesting to see how the mask rules/fines are enforced AND if there are any resulting confrontations..........

Delta reports that in the past month they have only had 17 incidents where a passenger was removed from a flight for refusing to wear a mask. All 17 have been banned from further travel on Delta. They have now instituted a procedure at the boarding desk where you must be wearing a proper mask ( no bandannas) prior to entering the jetway. They have free masks for those who come without one. They also will have security personel there to insure compliance.

   They emphasized no exceptions.

MTA police don't do the subways. The NYPD does, and they have been doing near zero fare evasion enforcement, which is massive. I don't expect much to come of this.

in this day and age with many suspects FAILING to comply with officers commands, it will be interesting to see IF this is strictly enforced...........

In the Northeast I feel there is

1) an anti-mask movement in the works (or people will wear a mask, but then put a "symbol" on it to indicate they are complying, but don't agree with wearing it).

2) cabin fever building.....even just a week after Labor Day, with cooler weather coming, people are wanting to get out and do something but are limited because a lot of events and functions are cancelled. This is putting pressure on organziations or businesses with capacity limits.

I am noticing:

3. A boycotting of businesses requiring or enforcing masks.  I'm not patronizing Amtrak.  I am not flying (not that I ever would anyway).  I skipped buying an excursion ticket on a scenic railroad.  If a business wants my money they will take part in resisting the worthless regulations.  Its my choice and its their choice.  Others are welcome to patronize only the businesses which enforce masking.  Sounds like the most fair solution.

4. Modified masks. - demand a mask? Yeah it will be one that I can breathe through which will absolutely not meet any medical requirements.  Mask theater.

5. Vote out those politicians who are acting as dictators.  Expect change in VA.

6. If challenged by anyone semi-official I depart and remind them that I am taking my spending with me to somewhere else.  If a public employee, any form of rudeness will be reported.  If its another regular person they will be ignored.  If they persist, they may get an earful.

Once you get outside of the urban areas mask use is less than 10% yet these areas have no massive outnbreak of illness.  Mask use is maybe 50% in grocery stores and simialr logical places in this suburban area..

In my suburban area in NJ, which is no longer a national hotspot, which has a transmission rate of about 1.0 and positivity rate of about 2%, there is 100% compliance of masks within stores, which are required by executive order. I found the same to be true in Central NY state. It is NOT a personal freedom issue, nor is  prohibiting smoking or requiring seat belts.

The science on speading virus via masks has long since spoken. That is not an arguable point.

Politicians have enacted laws to prevent you from running around crossing gates, passing trffic signals at stop, running past a stop sign, going 75 on a residential street. Denying your rights? Vote them out?

Gas stations prohibit smoking while dispensing fuel. Denying your rights? Take your money elsewhere?

Railroad rules prevent boarding moving equipment from the front (actually, don't remember if it's still there, used to be). Denying your rights? Do it anyway?

Pyrotechnics in dry grass during a wildfire condition warning that denies rights? Vote out the politicians? Hey, they weren't hurt; it was perfectly safe.

We need a lot more attention to being a society, not autonomous people attempting to share space, each to his own advantage. Current attitudes would have lost WWII.

like most people, i do NOT like wearing a mask.  i do it because i think it will lessen the chances of me being infected by or spreading covid-19.  i will do so UNTIL i am convinced there is a PROVEN covid-19 vaccine.

of course, if i enter a place were wearing a mask is mandatory, i DO it.

IF there are rules/laws for riding buses, subways, and trains, they should be enforced.  end of story................

There is a huge difference between boarding/riding airplanes and boarding/riding buses, subways & commuter trains and enforcement of mask wearing.  When travelers board planes, there are usually one and often two staff at the gates who can enforce wearing of masks.  Once on the aircraft, there are on-board staff who can enforce mask policies.  Pilots do not have to be the enforces.

There are no comparable "filters" for riders boarding transit buses, subways and commuter trains.  It will be up to the police to enforce the mask regulation, but police cannot be on board every bus and train.

Hope it all works out for transit employees, riders and the police enforcing the mask rule.

This act should take care of those who hate COVID politics, to wear a mask under protest. While "mask hostilities" have been reported sporadically, I haven't encountered one through 6 different domestic airports during the pandemic. One guy (probably out of habit) didn't put his mask back on when he entered the jetway, but the airline staffed reminded him (in a loud voice) and he complied, and was allowed to board.

Some areas won't suffer from too much cabin fever, because outside California's COVID oppression, businesses are already open (with restricted dining in) with mandatory mask policy, which the people didn't have problems with. One diner I visited put plexiglass between seats, to allow most of the seats to be occupied - seems local officials approved of their methods. Open table seats where plexiglass couldn't be placed were cordoned off to promote social distancing. That state (according to an airline) is labeled as COVID "low risk" and despite local (SF Bay Area) media trying to scare people off from dining in, I didn't get sick, I didn't get anyone sick, and apparently, neither did many others in that state. Isn't that the basic idea, rules or not?

I've sacrificed my nose/mouth freedoms so I can preserve most of my freedom to travel.

Agree. How about no shoes, no shirt, no service? How about airport security?

You are spot on about WWII. If our country was like it is now, we'd never have won the war.
