Boomerang Zephyr at Yuba Pass
Author: BoilingMan

Yesterday's Zephyr TODAY!    Monday's winter weather scrubbed the launch of #5, the California Zephyr, out of Chicago..  As a result, it was decided to turn yesterday's Zephyr out of Emeryville at Salt Lake City to take it's place.
Got that?
So here we see the turned #6, now #5, making a 6hr late sunset crossing of Donner Pass.

The decision to turn in SLC was made the day before #6 left Emeryville, so no one aboard was expecting the train would be going further.

That drone continues to pay off. Good that you were able to catch it. I thought about getting out to grab a shot, but instead I built a sledding run through the trees with the kids. So it goes.

No, I don’t think so. Recently there have been a few Zephyrs with baggage cars- all I’ve seen have been on the rear like this.

Smart decision...... Glad they decided to keep things going. Last year the Empire Builder turned at Whitefish for a few days till the BNSF train that struck a rock slide and derailed could be cleared in the canyon west of Whitefish.....

I would assume a factor in the decision making was that because there was no 5(15), there would not be a 6(18) out of Emeryville either.  At some point the dominoes of passenger service will catch up to you-  whether it be rail or air or whatever.

Thank you. This one was a little bit tricky. There were gusts of wind, off and on, that the drone doesn’t much care for. Also, I was slowly loosing light as the sun set. The shadows were already climbing to trees while I waited. I kinda wish they’d arrived about 10-15min earlier.
I blame Mark.

Nice long train, great shot.

Handy to have a drone, beats a long hike to the top of the mountain.

Thanks for sharing.
